Student Federation of India (SFI), Tripura state committee, took to the streets in Agartala, protesting what they view as the forced imposition of English as the medium of instruction in state government schools.
Speaking at the demonstration, State Secretary of SFI, Sandipan Deb, expressed deep concerns over the abrupt decision by the state government to introduce English as the sole language of instruction and to administer Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations in Vidyajyoti schools following the CBSE curriculum.
Deb highlighted the challenges faced by a significant number of students in state government schools who are accustomed to Bengali as the medium of instruction and examination. He questioned how students would adapt to English or Hindi so suddenly.
The SFI strongly criticized this decision, considering it unfair and illogical. They called on the state government to halt what they perceived as an unjust financial burden on impoverished families through Vidyajyoti schools.
Emphasizing that “Free and Compulsory Education is the fundamental right of every citizen,” the SFI demanded that the state government revoke NEP-2020 (National Education Policy 2020) and ensure that students across the state have access to free education.
This protest underscores the ongoing debate and concerns surrounding language policies and educational access in Tripura. The SFI’s demands reflect their commitment to protecting the interests of students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, in the state’s education system.
