In a collaborative operation, the Tripura Police and Assam Rifles made a significant breakthrough on Tuesday night, successfully seizing 551 grams of heroin and apprehending three individuals in Kumarghat.
The operation, led by SDPO Kumarghat, Kamal Debbarma, was executed based on confidential intelligence received by the police. Acting on this information, authorities intercepted a vehicle suspected to have arrived from Assam near the 91 miles Naka point.
Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, law enforcement officials uncovered 50 packets containing a total of 551 grams of heroin. Subsequently, the driver of the vehicle and two other occupants were taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
Superintendent of Police for Unakoti, Kanta Jahangir, estimated the street value of the seized narcotics to be approximately Rs 2.5 crore. The arrested individuals are currently undergoing rigorous interrogation to determine the extent of their involvement in the drug trafficking operation.
A case has been registered against the three suspects, all of whom are residents of South Tripura district. The police have already initiated a comprehensive probe into the incident to trace the origins and intended destination of the illicit narcotics.
This incident has cast doubts on the efficiency of security personnel stationed at the Churaibari check post, as the vehicle carrying the drugs managed to reach Kumarghat without detection. Authorities are expected to launch an internal inquiry to assess the security lapse and implement necessary measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
In the meantime, in yet another incident in an act of collective vigilance, concerned residents of Belonia’s Master Para area took matters into their own hands on Wednesday by detaining several drug addicts and peddlers who had been tarnishing the area’s atmosphere for an extended period.
According to reports, three young individuals had traveled from Santirbazar to Amjad Nagar with the intention of procuring drugs from a local dealer. On their way back, they were apprehended by local residents.
While two of the three youths admitted their guilt, the third individual named Sujan managed to evade capture and fled the scene. However, upon conducting a thorough search, a substantial quantity of drugs was discovered in the possession of the detained individuals.
Subsequently, the Belonia police were alerted to the situation and promptly arrived at the location after receiving the information. The police took custody of the two arrested youths and confiscated the illicit drugs.
Investigations are ongoing to trace the whereabouts of the escaped suspect, Sujan, and to ascertain the extent of the drug network in the area. The collaborative efforts of vigilant residents and law enforcement aim to curb the menace of drug abuse and trafficking, fostering a safer environment for the community.
