Agartala and several parts of the state experienced a significant disruption in normal life as heavy showers lashed the region on Sunday. While no casualties were reported, the incessant rainfall led to widespread damage and inconvenience for residents.
The city of Agartala was submerged in knee-deep water, and the heavy downpour resulted in the uprooting of numerous trees. Prompt action was taken to clear the rainwater from the city roads using pump stations once the rainfall subsided. However, the waterlogging caused substantial damage to several vehicles, including two-wheelers.
In a distressing incident near Netaji Club in the Ujan Abhoynagar area, it was reported that around seven vehicles were washed away by the rainwater. Additionally, at Jagannath Bari Park, a massive tree collapsed, leading to partial damage to the sidewall of the park.
According to meteorological sources, Agartala recorded a rainfall of 067.1 mm until 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. While the water levels in rivers increased, they remained below the expected flood level by evening.
The adverse weather conditions also caused partial damage to one house in Sonamura, under the Sepahijala district, and 15 houses in Kamalpur, under the Dhalai district, due to thunderstorms and strong winds.
As per a cumulative report, the region has witnessed three deaths, 18 injuries, 50 fully damaged houses, 108 severely damaged houses, and 361 partly damaged houses during the period from June 1 to June 18. Local administrations have already provided assistance to many affected families.
In various subdivisions, the seasonal rains caused significant damage and severely disrupted the power supply. Sonamura witnessed disrupted traffic on the Sonamura-Boxonagar road, and shops were affected when a large tree collapsed at Radhamadhav Bari.
The NDRF, TSR personnel, and Fire Service personnel worked together to clear the road. Furthermore, the Tamsabari area experienced significant electricity supply disruptions as rainwater entered several houses.
The authorities are actively working to restore normalcy, provide assistance to affected individuals, and address the damages caused by the heavy showers.
