Tripura has crossed 20 MW of rooftop solar power generation under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with 5,819 households installing solar systems. The initiative has distributed Rs. 43.01 crore in subsidies, promoting renewable energy across the state.

Tripura has crossed the significant milestone of 20 MW in rooftop solar power generation under the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with 5,819 households installing solar power systems across the state as of November 3, 2026.

According to official data, the total installed rooftop solar capacity has reached 20,002 kilowatt peak (kWp), marking progress in the state’s efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources.

The scheme has received considerable participation from households across Tripura. A total of 18,186 registrations have been recorded, while 8,421 applications have been submitted for rooftop solar installations under the programme.

Financial assistance has also been extended to thousands of beneficiaries. So far, 5,092 households have received government subsidies amounting to Rs. 43.01 crore, helping families reduce the initial investment required to install rooftop solar systems.

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, households can generate electricity through solar panels installed on their rooftops and use the power for their daily requirements. Any surplus electricity can be supplied to the power grid, depending on the applicable arrangements. This helps reduce household electricity expenses while contributing to the state’s overall renewable energy generation capacity.

The initiative is also expected to encourage greater public participation in clean energy production and support the transition towards more sustainable electricity sources.

Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), under the leadership of Managing Director Biswajit Basu, is focusing on expanding the scheme and bringing more households within its coverage. The corporation is working towards increasing awareness and encouraging eligible consumers to take advantage of the rooftop solar programme.

In another major initiative, the state is preparing to extend support to 1.5 lakh economically weaker households through a separate programme. Implementation of this initiative is expected to begin shortly, providing additional opportunities for financially disadvantaged families to benefit from solar energy.

The proposed support programme is expected to expand access to renewable energy among economically weaker sections and strengthen household-level electricity generation across Tripura.

The achievement of 20 MW reflects the growing adoption of rooftop solar technology in the state. With thousands of households already benefiting from installations and government subsidies, the programme is contributing to reducing conventional electricity consumption and promoting environmentally sustainable energy practices.

The state government’s continued focus on renewable energy expansion, alongside TSECL’s implementation efforts, is expected to bring more households under solar power coverage in the coming months.

Tripura’s progress under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana represents an important step towards strengthening renewable energy infrastructure, reducing electricity costs for consumers and encouraging wider adoption of clean energy across the state.
