The Centre has approved a two-year additional service period for 75% of Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme. The decision has received positive reactions from defence aspirants, academy operators and families, offering extended service opportunities and a pathway towards regular military enrolment.
The Union Cabinet’s decision to provide an additional two-year engagement period to 75 per cent of Agniveers under the Agnipath scheme has received a positive response from defence aspirants, defence academy operators and families of serving personnel across different parts of the country.
The announcement has generated fresh enthusiasm among young people preparing for military recruitment, with many describing the decision as an opportunity to serve the nation for a longer period, gain additional professional experience and improve their prospects of continuing in the armed forces.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced the Cabinet’s decision on November 4, describing it as an important development for the Indian Armed Forces and Agniveers.
Under the revised arrangement, 25 per cent of Agniveers completing their initial four-year engagement will continue to be considered for regular enrolment in the armed forces on merit, as originally envisaged. The remaining 75 per cent will be offered a second engagement period of two years, subject to their willingness.
After completing the additional two-year period, Agniveers willing to continue will be offered an opportunity for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to prescribed objective selection criteria. The revised arrangement also provides for higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits during the additional engagement period.
The announcement comes as the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme approaches the completion of its initial four-year service tenure in November and December 2026. Thousands of personnel who were earlier expected to leave after four years will now have an opportunity to continue serving for another two years.
In Bharatpur, Rajasthan, young defence aspirants and academy representatives welcomed the decision, saying it would encourage more candidates to pursue careers in the armed forces.
Deepak Khatoti, director of Ishwar Defence Academy, described the announcement as encouraging and said the extended service opportunity could motivate more youngsters to participate in defence recruitment. He urged candidates to prepare seriously and make the most of the opportunities available under the revised arrangement.
Agniveer recruitment aspirant Shiv Singh said the additional two years would allow young people to serve the country for a longer period. Another aspirant, Brahma, said the decision would increase confidence among candidates and provide Agniveers with more professional experience. He also expressed hope that the move would bring relief to serving personnel and their families.
Poppy Singh also welcomed the announcement but raised concerns about remuneration. He said financial considerations remained important for candidates, particularly those belonging to middle-class families, and urged the government to ensure appropriate salary benefits alongside the extended service period.
In Didwana, Rajasthan, defence academy operators and parents of aspiring candidates also shared their reactions to the revised arrangement. Defence academy operator Dungar Ram Jakhar said the decision would provide young recruits with a longer opportunity to remain associated with the armed forces.
Parents, including Ompal Singh and Jitendra Punia, discussed the implications of the decision for aspiring candidates and their families, particularly in terms of extended service opportunities and future career prospects.
The announcement also received a positive response from families of Agniveer personnel in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir. Residents Syed Abbas and Syed Maroof expressed happiness, saying the additional two years would give their children another opportunity to serve the country and contribute to national security.
For these families, the revised arrangement represents an opportunity for their children to continue their association with the armed forces while gaining further experience in military service.
The Agnipath scheme was introduced on June 14, 2022, with an initial four-year engagement period for recruited personnel. The latest decision follows performance assessments and feedback from the armed forces regarding the service of Agniveers over the past four years.
