Kerala has appointed popular Malayalam actors Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj as Forest Department brand ambassadors, while Mammootty takes on road safety and cyber security awareness roles. The state government aims to use celebrity influence to strengthen public awareness campaigns.

Kerala is increasingly turning to popular Malayalam film stars to promote public awareness campaigns, with actors Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj being appointed as brand ambassadors of the state’s Forest Department. Superstar Mammootty has also taken on important public awareness responsibilities related to road safety and cyber security.

The latest appointments reflect the Kerala government’s growing emphasis on using the popularity and public influence of film personalities to communicate important social messages and reach wider audiences.

Kerala Forest Minister Shibu Baby John announced the selection of Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj as brand ambassadors of the Forest Department. Through their association, the department aims to strengthen awareness about forest conservation, wildlife protection and the importance of preserving the state’s natural environment.

Their appointments add to a growing list of Malayalam cinema personalities being associated with government-led public campaigns.

Veteran superstar Mammootty has been roped in as the brand ambassador of the Kerala Road Safety Authority. His association is expected to help promote responsible driving practices, road discipline and public awareness about traffic safety.

Mammootty has also received another important public responsibility. Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala recently named the actor as Kerala Police’s Cyber Security Captain under the CLICK initiative.

Under this initiative, Mammootty is expected to help spread awareness about cyber security, online safety and responsible digital behaviour. The campaign aims to encourage people to remain alert against cyber threats and adopt safer practices while using the internet and digital platforms.

With these appointments, Kerala has brought together three prominent Malayalam film personalities to support different public awareness initiatives. While Mammootty will be associated with road safety and cyber security campaigns, Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj will focus on communicating messages related to forest and wildlife conservation.

The government’s strategy highlights the growing importance of celebrity participation in public communication. Film personalities enjoy considerable popularity across different age groups, and their influence extends beyond cinema through television appearances, social media platforms, interviews and fan communities.

Government awareness campaigns often face the challenge of reaching people across different sections of society. By involving familiar and influential personalities, departments hope to make important messages more engaging, accessible and memorable.

For instance, a popular actor encouraging motorists to wear helmets, follow traffic rules and drive responsibly could attract greater public attention. Similarly, messages about cyber fraud, online security and responsible internet use may reach more people when communicated through well-known personalities.

The involvement of Kunchacko Boban and Prithviraj is also expected to bring greater visibility to forest-related issues, including wildlife protection, environmental conservation and responsible interaction with nature.

Kerala’s initiative represents an interesting combination of the entertainment industry and public service. Rather than depending exclusively on conventional advertisements and government awareness programmes, the state is seeking to use the reach of cinema to strengthen its communication efforts.

However, the effectiveness of these appointments will ultimately depend on how successfully celebrity involvement translates into public participation and behavioural change.

Whether the campaigns lead to safer roads, greater cyber awareness and stronger public support for forest conservation remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Kerala’s latest move demonstrates how popular film personalities can become important partners in communicating social responsibilities and government initiatives to the wider public.
