BJP national president Nitin Nabin criticised the Congress after claiming the party scored zero in MLC elections across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. He said the results challenged opposition allegations about EVMs and reflected public confidence in Narendra Modi.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin on Wednesday criticised the Congress over its reported poor performance in Legislative Council (MLC) elections across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, claiming that the party failed to secure any votes on ballot papers in the contests. He described the outcome as a rejection of what he called the Congress’s “anarchistic politics” and asserted that public confidence remained with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a post on social media platform X, Nabin argued that the election results demonstrated that voters continued to support Modi regardless of whether elections were conducted using electronic voting machines (EVMs) or traditional ballot papers.
“Congress’s score on ballot papers too is 0 in the MLC elections of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh!” Nabin wrote, adding that the public was repeatedly rejecting the Congress’s political approach. He also said that voters’ trust and support remained with the Prime Minister.
The BJP president’s remarks came amid an ongoing political debate over the credibility of India’s electoral process. Opposition parties, particularly the Congress, have repeatedly raised concerns about EVMs and alleged irregularities in elections. The BJP, meanwhile, has defended the electoral system and accused the opposition of questioning election results when outcomes do not favour them.
By referring to elections involving ballot papers, Nabin sought to challenge the Congress’s criticism of EVM-based voting. His argument was that the party’s electoral performance could not be explained solely by concerns surrounding electronic voting machines.
BJP leaders have portrayed the reported results as evidence of the Congress’s organisational and political challenges. According to the party, the outcome in the four states indicates that the opposition has struggled to establish a strong connection with voters.
The BJP has also maintained that the Congress’s repeated allegations concerning EVMs are an attempt to divert attention from its electoral setbacks and organisational weaknesses. Nabin’s latest statement reflects the party’s broader effort to highlight Modi’s popularity and present recent electoral outcomes as an endorsement of the government’s leadership.
However, the claim that the Congress secured a zero score in the MLC elections across all four states was presented in Nabin’s political statement. The specific election-wise results and the meaning of the reported zero score would need to be assessed against the official results of the respective contests.
MLC elections are distinct from state Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Legislative Council members can be elected through different categories of electorates, including legislators, local authorities, graduates and teachers, depending on the seat being contested. Consequently, individual results reflect the voting patterns of the relevant electorate and should not automatically be treated as a comprehensive measure of public opinion across an entire state.
The political exchange comes as the BJP and Congress continue to debate electoral integrity, governance and public trust ahead of upcoming elections. Both parties are expected to intensify their political campaigns, with the BJP emphasising the Prime Minister’s leadership and the Congress continuing to raise questions about the electoral process.

Nabin’s comments underline the BJP’s intention to use recent election outcomes to reinforce its political messaging and counter opposition allegations regarding voting technology. The Congress’s response and the detailed official results of the MLC contests will remain important to understanding the wider political implications of the claims.
The episode highlights how election results, voting procedures and public confidence have become central issues in the continuing contest between India’s ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.
