Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared three days of national mourning after a deadly high-speed train collision in central Spain killed at least 68 people. Authorities launched a judicial and technical investigation as rescue teams assisted survivors and injured passengers.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced three days of official national mourning following a devastating high-speed train collision in central Spain that claimed at least 68 lives and left dozens of passengers injured. Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances behind the disaster and determine whether human error, operational negligence or technical failures contributed to the crash.
Sánchez made the announcement on Wednesday while speaking to reporters at an emergency command operations centre established near the crash site in Toledo province. He expressed condolences to the victims and their families, describing the incident as a tragedy affecting the entire country.
“All of Spain is in mourning,” the Prime Minister said, underscoring the national impact of the collision. He assured the public that the authorities would pursue a thorough investigation and hold those responsible accountable if any safety violations or systemic failures were identified.
“We will get to the bottom of this,” Sánchez said, stressing that investigators would examine every relevant aspect of the accident, including the possibility of human error, operational shortcomings and failures involving automatic railway safety systems.
The immediate priority for emergency services remains assisting injured passengers, searching damaged carriages and supporting the families of those killed or missing. Medical teams have been providing treatment to survivors, while authorities are also working to ensure that affected passengers and relatives receive psychological support.
Collision on the Madrid–Seville High-Speed Railway
The collision occurred on Wednesday morning in Toledo province, approximately 120 kilometres south of Madrid, along the high-speed Madrid–Seville railway corridor.
According to preliminary reports, a state-operated Renfe high-speed train struck the rear of a stationary commercial Iryo train operating within the same railway corridor. The circumstances that brought the two passenger trains into the same section of track remain under investigation.
The impact caused extensive damage to the train carriages, complicating rescue operations and efforts to reach passengers who may have been trapped inside the wreckage. Emergency personnel continued search-and-rescue operations as authorities assessed the scale of the destruction and worked to identify the victims.
Emiliano García-Page, president of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha, confirmed that the death toll had risen to at least 68. Dozens of other passengers were reported injured, with emergency responders continuing to assist those affected.
Investigation Focuses on Railway Safety
Railway safety regulators and investigative agencies have initiated a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators are expected to examine train movements, signalling records, operational procedures and the functioning of automatic safety systems to determine how the two trains came to occupy the same section of track.
The investigation will also seek to establish whether any technical malfunction, communication failure or breach of railway safety procedures contributed to the disaster. Authorities have pledged to pursue the evidence before drawing conclusions about the cause of the collision.
Sánchez emphasised that the investigation would be comprehensive and that any identified failures would be addressed. However, the precise cause of the crash had not been established in the preliminary information available.

As rescue and recovery operations proceed, authorities remain focused on helping survivors, providing information to relatives and establishing the facts behind one of the country’s most devastating recent railway disasters. The findings of the judicial and technical investigations are expected to be central to determining accountability and identifying measures needed to strengthen passenger safety.
