The Indian Embassy in Madrid has opened an emergency helpline following a deadly high-speed train collision in Spain that killed 68 people. Authorities are investigating a possible railway signalling failure as rescue teams continue searching for victims and injured passengers.
The death toll from a devastating collision involving two high-speed trains in Spain has risen to 68, prompting the Indian Embassy in Madrid to open an emergency helpline for Indian nationals and their families seeking assistance. Rescue teams continue searching the wreckage as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding one of the country’s deadliest recent railway accidents.
The collision occurred at approximately 8:54 am local time on Wednesday near Urda station in Toledo province, around 120 kilometres south of Madrid. A high-speed Renfe train struck a stationary Iryo train from behind on the railway line connecting Madrid and Seville. The impact caused several carriages to derail, with some reportedly falling down an embankment.
According to the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, 68 people have died in the accident. More than 100 people have sustained injuries of varying severity, while emergency services continue to assess the situation and provide medical assistance to affected passengers. Authorities have warned that rescue operations may uncover further victims as teams examine the damaged carriages.
Indian Embassy Opens Emergency Helpline
Following the tragedy, the Embassy of India in Madrid advised Indian nationals who were travelling on the affected trains, as well as their relatives, to contact the embassy for assistance.
In a notice published on its official X account, the embassy also requested people to share information about its emergency helpline with anyone who might require support. The advisory aims to help Indian citizens and families establish contact with the authorities and obtain relevant information during the ongoing emergency response.
Indian nationals who believe their relatives may have been aboard either train have been urged to seek assistance through the embassy’s official communication channels.
Railway Signalling Failure Under Investigation
Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said a computer communication failure had disrupted the LZB railway safety control system shortly before the collision. The failure reportedly affected a 63-kilometre section of the railway line and automatically brought trains operating in the affected area to a halt.
According to Puente, the railway control centre subsequently authorised a Renfe train to resume its journey despite a red signal indicating that it should not proceed. He described the decision to allow the train to move while another train remained stationary on the track as “inexplicable.”
The circumstances surrounding the authorisation, the signalling failure and the movements of both trains are now central to the investigation. Authorities are examining the sequence of events to determine whether operational errors, technical problems or other factors contributed to the collision. The precise cause has not yet been established.
Rescue Operations Continue as Spain Declares National Mourning
Emergency personnel, including firefighters, police officers, medical teams and other rescue workers, have been deployed at the accident site. Specially trained dogs are assisting search teams as they examine the wreckage for passengers who may still be trapped or missing.
Regional authorities have coordinated emergency medical assistance and established facilities to support injured passengers and their families. Hospitals in the affected region have been involved in treating casualties, while railway services on the affected high-speed route have been disrupted.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared three days of national mourning following the disaster. The announcement reflects the scale of the tragedy and the loss suffered by victims’ families across the country. The government has also pledged to establish the facts surrounding the accident through a thorough investigation.
Authorities Seek Answers After Deadly Collision
The collision has raised serious questions about railway safety procedures, the operation of signalling systems and the decisions made by railway controllers during the disruption. Investigators will need to establish why the Renfe train was permitted to resume its journey and whether the safety procedures in place were properly followed.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy’s emergency assistance arrangements remain important for Indian nationals who may have been affected by the accident. Families seeking information have been encouraged to contact the embassy through its official channels and share its advisory with others who may need assistance.
As Spain mourns the victims, rescue workers continue their efforts and investigators work to determine exactly how the collision occurred. Further information is expected as authorities complete their assessments and release additional findings.
