Nagaland United Sports Club will make history in the 2026-27 Indian Football League, becoming the first club from Nagaland to compete nationally. Inspired by football legend Dr. Talimeren Ao, the club aims to promote local talent and represent Naga football.

Nagaland United Sports Club is set to make history when it begins its campaign in the 2026-27 Indian Football League (IFL) on October 30 against Real Kashmir at the TRC Stadium in Srinagar. The club will become the first team from Nagaland to compete in the national league, marking a significant milestone for football in the northeastern state.

Founded in 2024 in Chümoukedima, Nagaland United has reached the national stage within just two years. Its entry into the IFL represents a major opportunity for local footballers and revives the legacy of Dr. Talimeren Ao, who captained independent India’s football team at the 1948 Olympic Games.

For Nagaland, a state with a longstanding passion for football, the club’s arrival in the national league is particularly significant. Although the region has produced talented players and maintained a strong football culture, it had never previously been represented by a club in the national competition.

A Rapid Rise Through Domestic Football

Nagaland United played its first competitive match on January 28, 2025, against Barak FC at a newly opened stadium in Chümoukedima. The date coincided with what would have been the 107th birthday of Talimeren Ao. Although the team lost the match 2-3, it soon established itself as a competitive side in the Nagaland Super League.

The club finished second among seven teams during the league phase, conceding only nine goals in 12 matches, before securing third place overall. Forward Nisede Peseyie made headlines by scoring a hat-trick against 27 United and receiving an individual award. Head coach Khogen Singh was also named Coach of the Season.

The club secured its first major trophy in October 2025 by winning the NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy in Kohima. Nagaland United recorded victories of 7-0, 2-1 and 4-0 during the knockout rounds before defeating Chedema Village Youth Organisation 3-1 in the final on October 18.

Arap Konyak, Joel Haokip and Manton Konyak scored in the final. The club also collected individual honours for Player of the Tournament, Best Goalkeeper and Best Defender, while Singh received another Best Coach award.

Following the Footsteps of Talimeren Ao

Nagaland United’s journey carries special significance because of its connection with Dr. Talimeren Ao, one of the most celebrated figures in Indian football history.

Ao began playing football on the mission playground at Impur in the Naga Hills. During his childhood, players often played barefoot, using improvised balls made from rags, woven cane or pomelos.

His father, the first Reverend in the Naga Hills, hoped that his son would become a doctor and serve the Naga people. Despite losing his father to typhoid before reaching his late teens, Ao fulfilled that ambition while building an extraordinary sporting career.

On July 31, 1948, Ao captained India in its first Olympic football match as an independent nation. India faced France at Cricklefield Stadium in Ilford, east London, losing 1-2 after conceding a goal in the final minute. Eight Indian players competed without football boots.

When asked about playing barefoot, Ao famously remarked: “We play football in India, whereas you play bootball.”

After returning to India, Ao continued his medical career and eventually became Nagaland’s first Director of Health Services. His legacy remains an important part of the state’s sporting identity.

A Goodwill Agreement Opens the National League Door

Nagaland United’s entry into the IFL became possible through a goodwill agreement with Aizawl FC, the Mizoram-based club that won the national league title in 2017.

Aizawl made history by becoming the first club from Northeast India to win the title after drawing 1-1 with Shillong Lajong on the final day of that campaign. William Koso, the first coach from Nagaland to earn an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ‘A’ licence, was part of Aizawl’s coaching staff during the historic season.

The relationship between the clubs strengthened in June 2026 when Aizawl visited Nagaland for a Football for Peace initiative. The June 6 match, titled “Match for Peace, Goal for Hope”, was held in Chümoukedima, with ticket proceeds directed towards an orphanage. Aizawl won 2-0.

Following Aizawl owner Robert R. Royte’s support for Nagaland’s national-level representation, the All India Football Federation approved the goodwill agreement on September 9. Under the arrangement, Nagaland United took Aizawl’s place in the IFL, with Aizawl committing to provide technical and development support.

Aizawl will continue competing in the Mizoram Premier League after spending 11 consecutive seasons in the national league without relegation.

Local Talent Remains a Central Priority

Despite inheriting a squad and staff with national-league experience, Nagaland United’s management has emphasised the importance of developing footballers from the state.

On October 17, 20-year-old central midfielder Ghuqhe Chishi and Vinato Achumi, both products of Nagaland’s under-20 teams, were recognised following their selection to represent the club in the IFL.

Club officials have also been working to recruit coaching and support staff. The recruitment process reportedly attracted hundreds of applications, including candidates from Argentina, Spain and Brazil.

Club coordinator Gentleson Vashum said the team would face a demanding schedule of 20 league matches, comprising 10 home and 10 away fixtures. Plans are also underway to install FIFA-approved artificial turf at Chümoukedima to improve playing facilities.

The club’s board member Abu Metha has stressed that Nagaland cannot afford to wait years to establish itself through the traditional lower-division route. He said the club intends to compete seriously at the national level, adding, “Whenever you enter any arena, you enter to win.”

Nagaland Football Association president K. Neibou Sekhose has described the club’s entry into the IFL as a historic development, while emphasising that it is only the beginning of the state’s wider football ambitions.

Home Matches to Bring National Football to Nagaland

Nagaland United will play its first home match in the IFL against Gokulam Kerala on November 14 at Chümoukedima, where the club played its first competitive fixture in January 2025. Dempo are scheduled to visit later in November, while Mohammedan Sporting are due to arrive on December 19.

The 2026-27 season will return to a full home-and-away format, giving Nagaland United an opportunity to bring national-league football to its home supporters throughout the campaign.

The club has appealed to Naga communities living across India, particularly students, to support the team during away matches. Its opening fixture in Srinagar will provide the first opportunity for supporters living far from home to rally behind Nagaland’s representatives.

The IFL has also reported a substantial increase in television viewership, with the previous season attracting four times the audience of the season before it.

Nagaland United’s debut is therefore about more than competing for points. It offers a platform for local footballers to progress to the national stage, encourages investment in sporting infrastructure and gives a football-loving state an opportunity to establish a lasting presence in Indian football.

As the club prepares to face Real Kashmir on October 30, it carries the hopes of Nagaland and the legacy of Talimeren Ao, whose historic contribution to Indian football continues to inspire generations. The club’s challenge now is to turn its rapid rise into sustained success and create new opportunities for footballers from the Naga Hills.
