Spain’s Copa del Rey first round begins with 16 La Liga clubs facing lower-division opponents. Rayo Vallecano meet Recreativo de Huelva, while Espanyol travel to Sestao River, as smaller clubs seek memorable upsets in the knockout competition.

The first round of Spain’s Copa del Rey begins on Tuesday, with 16 La Liga clubs preparing to face lower-division opponents in knockout fixtures scheduled over three days. The opening round offers smaller clubs an opportunity to host top-flight teams, attract large crowds and potentially produce some of the competition’s biggest upsets.

Under the tournament’s knockout format, lower-division sides receive home advantage against La Liga opposition in the opening rounds. The arrangement provides financial benefits to smaller clubs while giving their players the opportunity to compete against established teams from Spain’s top division.

The first round brings together clubs from across the Spanish football pyramid, including amateur and regional teams that progressed through the preliminary stages. However, the difference in resources and playing standards between the divisions makes the fixtures particularly challenging for the lower-ranked sides.

Cup holders Real Sociedad, along with FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, are exempt from the first two rounds because of their participation in the Spanish Super Cup scheduled for February.

Among the most closely watched fixtures are Rayo Vallecano’s visit to Recreativo de Huelva and Espanyol’s trip to face Sestao River. Both lower-division opponents compete in the fourth tier of Spanish football, known as the Segunda Federación, and have attracted attention following their performances in the Copa Federación.

Recreativo de Huelva, founded in 1889 and recognised as Spain’s oldest football club, will host Rayo Vallecano. The historic club has a notable Copa del Rey record, having reached the final in 2003 before losing 3-0 to Mallorca.

Recreativo have also made a strong start to their current Segunda Federación campaign, collecting 17 points from eight matches to lead Group IV. Their home advantage and recent performances could make the encounter demanding for Rayo, who suffered a 3-0 defeat at home against Elche in their latest league match.

For Recreativo, the match represents an opportunity to test themselves against La Liga opposition and bring national attention to the club’s long footballing history. Rayo, meanwhile, will look to avoid an early elimination and regain momentum after their recent league setback.

Espanyol face another difficult assignment against Sestao River at the Las Llanas Stadium, located near Bilbao. Sestao have also started their Segunda Federación campaign strongly and lead their group, giving the home side additional confidence ahead of the encounter.

The match comes at a challenging time for Espanyol coach Manolo Gonzalez. Espanyol’s 2-1 defeat to Racing Santander on Saturday left the Barcelona-based club in the La Liga relegation zone, increasing scrutiny of the team’s performances and prompting speculation about the coach’s future.

The Copa del Rey fixture therefore carries added importance for Espanyol, who will aim to avoid another disappointing result. The club suffered an early exit from last season’s competition after losing away to Atletico Baleares, then competing in the third tier of Spanish football, the RFEF Primera Federación.

A further defeat against lower-division opposition would intensify the pressure surrounding the team as it attempts to improve its league position.

Other first-round fixtures will provide similar opportunities for smaller clubs to face prominent opponents. Pinatar will host Elche, Sporting de Alcázar will take on Malaga, and Manacor will welcome Villarreal.

For these clubs, hosting La Liga opposition offers a rare chance to compete on a major stage, while their supporters can look forward to seeing established professional teams in their local stadiums.

The Copa del Rey’s single-match knockout format ensures that each fixture carries significant consequences, with the possibility of extra time or penalties determining the outcome if teams remain level.

As the first round gets underway, attention will centre on whether the lower-division hosts can take advantage of home support and challenge their higher-profile visitors. For Rayo Vallecano and Espanyol, avoiding an early cup exit will be an important objective amid their respective league commitments.

The opening round once again highlights the distinctive appeal of the Copa del Rey, where clubs from different levels of Spanish football meet in a competition that offers smaller teams a rare opportunity to create memorable moments.
