BJP-Tipra Motha alliance for Tripura Village Committee polls has reportedly been finalised after Amit Shah, Manik Saha and Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma discussed indigenous land rights, tripartite agreement commitments and electoral coordination ahead of the September 28 TTAADC polls.
A political understanding between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) for the upcoming Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) has reportedly been finalised following a high-level meeting in New Delhi between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Tipra Motha founder Maharaja Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and BJP North East Coordinator Dr Sambit Patra were also present during the meeting, which focused on matters concerning the proposed electoral understanding between the two parties, as well as issues related to the development, welfare and rights of Tripura’s indigenous population.
The reported breakthrough comes ahead of the September 28 Village Committee elections, in which polling will be held for 587 Village Committees under the TTAADC. The proposed BJP-Tipra Motha alliance is expected to have significant political implications for the tribal areas, where both parties have been preparing for the electoral contest.
According to sources, the meeting in New Delhi addressed several differences that had delayed a formal electoral understanding between the BJP and Tipra Motha. One of the major issues discussed was the implementation of commitments made under the earlier tripartite agreement involving the Centre, the Tripura government and Tipra Motha.
The protection and implementation of land-related rights of indigenous people living within the TTAADC areas reportedly remained a key concern raised during the discussions. Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has consistently stressed the importance of safeguarding the land rights and interests of the indigenous population as part of any political understanding with the BJP.
Sources said Debbarma remained firm on the demand for protection of indigenous land rights during the New Delhi meeting. The BJP leadership reportedly gave an assurance that the concerns would be addressed and that commitments made under the tripartite agreement would be taken forward.
However, there was no immediate official announcement regarding the detailed contours of the proposed electoral arrangement, including seat-sharing and the distribution of Village Committee constituencies between the two parties.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha is expected to make a formal statement on the outcome of the meeting and the proposed electoral arrangement after his return. His announcement is likely to clarify the next steps for the BJP and Tipra Motha ahead of the Village Committee polls.
Confirming the meeting, Dr Manik Saha said on social media that he had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. He described the discussions as “fruitful and constructive” and said the meeting focused on matters of mutual importance as well as the development and welfare of the people of Tripura.
The Chief Minister also confirmed the presence of Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma and Dr Sambit Patra during the meeting.
The reported agreement assumes considerable political significance because Tipra Motha had earlier maintained that implementation of the tripartite agreement was a crucial condition before entering into an electoral understanding with the BJP. Issues concerning the political, economic and land rights of indigenous communities have remained central to Tipra Motha’s political position.
The BJP and Tipra Motha are already partners in the Tripura government. However, the two parties had contested the recent TTAADC elections separately. A joint strategy for the upcoming Village Committee elections could therefore represent a significant shift in their political coordination, particularly at the grassroots level in the state’s tribal areas.
The proposed alliance could also strengthen coordination between the two parties in campaigning, organisational activities and constituency-level planning. The Village Committee elections are considered important because of their direct connection with local governance in areas administered under the TTAADC.
With the reported political understanding now in place, attention is expected to shift towards seat-sharing arrangements, campaign coordination and the mechanism for implementing the commitments discussed during the New Delhi meeting.
