A total of 1,724 nominations have been filed for Tripura Village Committee elections, with 1,721 candidates in the fray so far. Major parties have submitted papers, but no BJP candidate has filed yet amid ongoing alliance and seat-sharing talks with Tipra Motha Party.
A total of 1,724 nomination papers have been filed so far for the upcoming Village Committee elections in Tripura, while the number of candidates who have submitted their papers stands at 1,721, according to an official of the State Election Commission.
The politically significant elections to the Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District are scheduled to be held on September 28. The election process is being conducted after a gap of nearly 10 years following the intervention of the Supreme Court.
Elections will be held across 587 Village Committees, covering a total of 4,597 seats. With the nomination process underway, all major political parties have begun submitting their candidates. However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not yet filed nomination papers for any candidate.
According to the latest break-up data shared by the election official, 865 CPI(M) candidates have filed nomination papers, while the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has submitted papers for 839 candidates. The Indian National Congress (INC) has filed eight nominations, while three candidates listed under CPI(M) in the official data and five candidates belonging to other parties have also submitted nomination papers.
The absence of BJP candidates has drawn attention amid ongoing discussions between the BJP and Tipra Motha Party over a possible electoral understanding for the Village Committee polls.
Sources within the BJP said the party was waiting for the alliance talks with the Tipra Motha Party to reach a final stage before announcing and filing nominations for its candidates.
A BJP leader said a meeting involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior leaders of the state BJP and the Tipra Motha Party had recently taken place in New Delhi. According to the leader, the discussions were aimed at working out an electoral arrangement between the two parties.

“A fruitful meeting has been chaired by the Union Home Minister at New Delhi in the presence of state BJP and Tipra Motha Party top brass. Within a couple of days, the whole scenario will be crystal clear. And, hopefully a seat-sharing adjustment shall be worked out,” the BJP leader said.

With the September 28 election approaching, the final shape of the political contest is expected to become clearer once the ongoing alliance and seat-sharing discussions conclude.
