Sensex and Nifty close 0.4% down today

Benchmark domestic equity indices ended 0.4% down today. The Sensex declined 307 points to close at 76,957. The Nifty dropped 95 points to settle at 24,800. Meanwhile, the broader market at the National Stock Exchange displayed a mixed trend. The Midcap 100 index gained 0.2%, while the Smallcap 100 index dipped 0.7 per cent. 
 
Earlier, the markets opened on a weak note as escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. Both the indices witnessed selling pressure across most sectors throughout the session. 
 
In the Sensex pack, 20 out of 30 companies registered losses. Among the top underperformers, Adani Ports declined 4.1%, ITC dropped around 3.7%, and Bharti Airtel lost nearly 2.8%. In contrast, Sun Pharma gained 1.9%, ICICI Bank added 1.7%, and Axis Bank rose one and a half per cent.  
 
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, 21 out of 28 sectors edged downward. Among the top laggards, Utilities decreased 2.6%, Metal lost 2.4%, and Services dipped 1.9%. In contrast, MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt rose over 1.2%, MidSmall Private Banks gained 1.2%, and Bankex added over 0.3%. 
 
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 2572 companies declined, 1858 advanced and 250 remained unchanged.
