Tripura govt steps up recruitment to fill 325 vacant college teaching posts, approves 200 new assistant professor positions and plans to upgrade Tripura Institute of Technology into a technical university while expanding infrastructure, research facilities and biotechnology initiatives.
The Tripura government has intensified efforts to strengthen higher education by accelerating the recruitment of college teachers, approving additional faculty positions and expanding infrastructure across government-run higher education institutions. The government has also announced plans to upgrade the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) into a state government technical university.
Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman informed the Assembly on Friday that the state has identified 325 vacant teaching posts across government colleges under the Higher Education Department. The details were provided in response to questions raised by MLAs Asoke Chandra Mitra, Sudip Roy Barman and Ranjit Debbarma.
Tripura currently has 41 government colleges, collectively catering to 69,677 students with 797 regular college teachers. The institutions include 29 general degree colleges, five professional colleges, six polytechnics and one technical college.
Of the 325 vacant teaching posts, 243 are in general degree colleges, while 26 vacancies are in professional colleges. The technical college has 46 vacant posts, while the six polytechnics together have 10 vacancies.
To address the shortage in general degree colleges, the Higher Education Department has already sent a requisition to the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) for recruitment to 201 assistant professor posts. According to the government, TPSC has completed the first phase of interviews and forwarded a list of 74 candidates from 14 subjects to the department.
The second phase of interviews is currently underway and is expected to be completed shortly. The government has also completed the necessary administrative formalities for the appointments, with offer letters already issued to selected candidates.
In another major move, the state Finance Department has approved the creation of 200 additional assistant professor posts for government degree colleges. Regular recruitment against these newly created positions will be undertaken after the Higher Education Department receives the list of candidates recommended by TPSC.
The government is also working to fill teaching vacancies in professional colleges. However, recruitment in these institutions requires amendments to the existing recruitment rules. The Higher Education Department is currently working on the required amendments before proceeding with appointments.
At the same time, the government has sought approval from the Finance Department to fill five vacant assistant professor posts at Government College of Music. Once the necessary recruitment rules are amended and approvals are secured, further steps will be taken to fill the remaining vacancies in professional colleges.
A significant higher education reform announced in the Assembly involves the Tripura Institute of Technology. The government plans to convert TIT into a state government technical university, a move expected to expand its academic and technical role in the state.
Following the proposed conversion, the government intends to strengthen the institute’s infrastructure and manpower. Remaining vacant positions will be filled according to the provisions of the Technical University Act. The upgrade is expected to provide a stronger institutional framework for technical education and related academic activities in Tripura.
Alongside recruitment, the state government is increasing investment in infrastructure at government colleges. Responding to a question from MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Kishor Barman said that Rs 89.77 crore had been allocated for infrastructure development in government colleges during the past three years.
Of the total allocation, Rs 85.27 crore has already been spent, according to the minister. The investment has supported several major infrastructure projects, including the construction of five new college buildings, seven research laboratories, one college library and 15 smart classrooms.
The government has also proposed construction of new buildings for several colleges during the next financial year. The proposed projects cover institutions in different parts of the state, including Rabindranath Tagore College in Bishalgarh, Michael Madhusudhan Datta College in Sabroom, Swami Vivekananda College in Mohanpur and Ambedkar College in Fatikroy.
New infrastructure has also been proposed for Adwaita Mallabarman Memorial College in Kamalpur, BBMC in Agartala, Dasarath Deb Memorial College in Khowai subdivision and Government Degree College at Charilam.
The government has further placed emphasis on science, technology, innovation and research among college students. Responding to a question from MLA Ranjit Debbarma, the minister said research-based activities have been accorded priority in the state’s higher education sector.
As part of efforts to encourage scientific research and innovation at the college level, 17 College Bio-tech Clubs have been established across Tripura.
The combined focus on filling teaching vacancies, creating additional faculty posts, upgrading technical education, improving college infrastructure and promoting research reflects the government’s broader effort to strengthen the higher education system.

With 325 existing teaching vacancies identified and another 200 assistant professor posts approved for creation, recruitment is expected to remain a key priority for the Higher Education Department. The proposed transformation of TIT into a technical university, meanwhile, could further expand the state’s capacity for technical education, research and skill development.
The government’s measures indicate a multi-pronged approach to higher education, with emphasis not only on increasing the number of teachers but also on improving learning facilities, research infrastructure and institutional capacity across Tripura’s government colleges.
