The Sepahijala district education unit has intensified surprise inspections across schools in the district, with the objective of improving academic performance, strengthening school management and addressing issues affecting students.
The inspection drive began on August 25 and is being carried out across schools under all seven blocks of Sepahijala district under the leadership of District Education Officer (DEO) Kanika Debbarma. As part of the initiative, 14 inspection teams have been formed to visit schools on a daily basis and assess their overall functioning.
One of the teams is being led directly by DEO Kanika Debbarma. Another team includes Deputy Director of the District Education Officer’s Office Md. Selim, OSDs Antony Debbarma and Rakesh Debbarma, along with seven State IS officials and three TTAADC IS officials.
The inspection teams are focusing primarily on the academic progress of students, particularly those studying from nursery to Class II. Officials are assessing the reading and writing abilities of young students to determine whether they are achieving the expected learning outcomes. The teams are also examining the general academic progress of students and identifying areas that may require greater attention.
Student attendance and teacher regularity are among the other major areas being checked during the surprise visits. Officials are verifying whether students are attending school regularly and whether teachers are maintaining their prescribed schedules and responsibilities. Cleanliness and the overall functioning of the schools are also being reviewed.
The quality and regularity of mid-day meals have received particular attention during the inspections. Officials are checking whether meals are being served properly to students, whether the food meets the required standards and whether schools are maintaining regularity in providing the meals.
According to DEO Kanika Debbarma, shortcomings were identified in 15 schools during the inspections conducted so far. Following the findings, show-cause notices were issued to 15 Headmasters. The notices are part of the department’s effort to seek explanations regarding deficiencies observed during the surprise visits.
The DEO said the inspections are primarily aimed at assessing students’ academic performance and identifying important issues affecting the functioning of schools. The exercise is also intended to ensure that schools maintain proper standards in teaching, attendance, cleanliness and student welfare.
Education officials have also warned that strict action could be taken against Headmasters or Assistant Headmasters who fail to cooperate with inspection teams during surprise visits. The warning comes as the department seeks greater accountability from school authorities and expects officials to cooperate fully during inspections.
The surprise inspection campaign has reportedly created concern among Headmasters and teachers across the district. However, education officials have maintained that the exercise is being conducted in the interest of students and to ensure that schools provide an appropriate learning environment.

On Friday, surprise inspections were conducted at several schools under the Jampuijala block. The DEO said the inspection drive would continue in the coming days across different parts of Sepahijala district.
The continuation of the inspections is expected to provide the education department with a broader assessment of school functioning across the district. Officials will continue monitoring academic performance, student attendance, teacher regularity, cleanliness and mid-day meal arrangements as part of the ongoing drive.
