Tripura University Vice-Chancellor Prof Debabrata Das outlines a research-led roadmap focused on innovation, technology-enabled education, industry-academia partnerships and Northeast-focused research to improve academic excellence, strengthen national standing, boost employability and support India’s development goals by 2047.
Tripura University is preparing to adopt a research-driven academic strategy aimed at strengthening its position among leading higher education institutions in the country, with Vice-Chancellor Prof Debabrata Das placing research, innovation, technology-enabled education and industry-academia collaboration at the centre of the university’s future roadmap.
Addressing faculty members, researchers, officials, employees and students at an event held at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Auditorium, Prof Das outlined his vision for the university and called for a gradual shift from conventional degree-oriented education towards a system focused more strongly on research, innovation, knowledge creation and practical learning.
“Universities do not merely prepare for the future; they create the future,” Prof Das said, underlining the need for education, research, innovation and social responsibility to advance together.
Research, he said, would remain one of the university’s major strategic priorities. Rather than focusing only on increasing the number of research publications, the institution would work towards encouraging high-quality and impactful research capable of attracting competitive grants, supporting interdisciplinary projects, generating patents and expanding consultancy and technology-transfer activities.
Several emerging and strategically important areas have been identified for greater attention, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, biotechnology, healthcare, climate change, sustainability, data analytics and the Indian knowledge system. The emphasis is expected to create opportunities for researchers and students to engage with fields that are increasingly influencing economic, technological and social development.
A significant component of the proposed research strategy will focus on the specific requirements and opportunities of Northeast India. Prof Das highlighted biodiversity, forest and water-resource management, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, climate change and disaster management as areas where research could provide meaningful regional benefits.
The university also plans to encourage systematic academic research into indigenous knowledge, local languages, traditions, culture, traditional healthcare practices and medicinal plants. Such initiatives, according to the Vice-Chancellor’s vision, could help preserve valuable local knowledge while subjecting it to scientific examination and creating opportunities for wider recognition.
The renewed research focus comes shortly after Prof Das assumed office as the university’s Vice-Chancellor. He has previously identified improvements in teaching, learning and research, along with strengthening students’ skills and employability, as key priorities for his tenure.
Prof Das also called for changes in classroom practices to make education more student-centric and outcome-oriented. Greater importance would be given to project-based learning, practical training, interdisciplinary education and research-oriented academic activities. The objective is to help students develop skills that extend beyond conventional classroom learning and prepare them for changing employment and professional requirements.
Technology, he said, should be viewed as an important enabler of education rather than a replacement for teachers. In an increasingly technology-driven academic environment, teachers would have to perform multiple roles as educators, mentors, researchers and innovators.
To expand its academic and research capabilities, Tripura University is also looking to establish stronger collaborations with premier institutions and organisations. Potential partners include IITs, IISERs, IISc, central and state universities, national laboratories, government agencies, industries, start-ups and international institutions.
Such partnerships could support joint research projects, faculty and student exchanges, collaborative publications, consultancy assignments and technology-development initiatives. The approach is expected to broaden the university’s academic network while creating additional opportunities for students and researchers.
Institutional infrastructure is another part of the proposed transformation. The Central Library is planned to be developed into a technology-enabled research and knowledge-support centre. The university is also looking at greater use of technology in administrative processes to improve efficiency and strengthen institutional management.
The Ministry of Education appointed Prof Das as Tripura University’s 11th permanent Vice-Chancellor for a five-year term after the post remained vacant for nearly a year. Before taking charge, he served as an adviser to the Higher Education Department of the Assam government and as Vice-Chancellor of Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management.
Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu has also stressed the importance of high-quality research, innovation and academic excellence at the university. During his meeting with Prof Das after the latter assumed office, the Governor also emphasised the need to accelerate recruitment against vacant teaching and non-teaching positions.
Prof Das has called upon teachers, researchers, employees and students to collectively contribute towards the national objective of building a developed India by 2047. His roadmap places Tripura University’s future growth on stronger research, innovation, technology adoption, collaboration and regional relevance.

With the university seeking to align academic activities with emerging technologies and Northeast-specific challenges, the research-led strategy is expected to shape its efforts to improve academic quality, strengthen national standing and create a more innovation-oriented learning environment. The university’s official website currently lists Prof Das as Vice-Chancellor.
