Tripura’s Ranjan Debnath, headmaster of PM SHRI Sabroom Girls Higher Secondary School, has been selected among 48 teachers for the National Teachers Award 2026, bringing national recognition to the state’s education sector and highlighting his contribution to improving school education and inspiring students in southern Tripura.

Tripura’s education sector has received a major national recognition with Ranjan Debnath, Headmaster of PM SHRI Sabroom Girls Higher Secondary School, selected among 48 distinguished teachers across India for the National Teachers Award 2026.

Debnath’s selection is being seen as a significant achievement for Sabroom and Tripura, particularly as it brings national attention to the contribution of educators working outside major urban centres. His recognition highlights the role of committed teachers in strengthening school education and creating meaningful opportunities for students in smaller towns and remote areas.

The National Teachers Award, instituted by the Ministry of Education, recognises teachers for their outstanding contribution to school education and their ability to bring positive and lasting changes to the lives of students. Debnath’s selection reflects the importance of grassroots educators who work to improve learning environments and educational outcomes.

According to preliminary details available from Debnath’s social media profile, he pursued his education at Umakanta Academy and MBB College in Agartala before beginning his teaching career. His professional journey has since taken him to PM SHRI Sabroom Girls Higher Secondary School, where he currently serves as headmaster.

The prestigious awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu on September 5, observed as Teachers’ Day in India. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. As part of the programme, short documentaries highlighting the work and achievements of the awardees will also be showcased.

The selection process for the National Teachers Award 2026 was conducted in three stages — district, state and national — to ensure a comprehensive and rigorous assessment of eligible teachers. This year’s final list comprises 48 teachers, including 26 male and 22 female educators, representing 27 States, seven Union Territories and six Central Government organisations.

The Ministry of Education had invited online self-nominations from eligible teachers between June 15 and July 20. The process was aimed at promoting transparency and ensuring wider participation in the selection of teachers deserving national recognition.

The Teachers’ Day ceremony will be telecast live on Doordarshan and SWAYAM PRABHA channels. It will also be streamed through the Ministry of Education’s webcast and official social media platforms, enabling people across the country to witness the national recognition of the selected educators.

For Sabroom and Tripura, Debnath’s selection represents more than an individual achievement. It places the spotlight on the dedication of teachers working at the grassroots level and demonstrates that educators from smaller towns can earn recognition on the national stage through sustained commitment to education.
