PV Sindhu begins her 2026 Badminton World Championships campaign with a clinical straight-game victory over Ireland’s Sophia Noble, advancing to the women’s singles Round of 32. The former world champion controlled the contest throughout and will next face Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang in a tougher second-round challenge at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Former world champion PV Sindhu made an impressive start to her 2026 Badminton World Championships campaign, producing a dominant straight-game victory over Ireland’s Sophia Noble at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Monday. The Indian seventh-ranked? No—Sindhu, ranked World No. 9 and seeded fifth, defeated the Irish debutant 21-7, 21-11 in just 29 minutes to advance to the women’s singles Round of 32.

Sindhu immediately established her authority in the opening game, racing to an 8-0 lead before Noble managed to settle into the contest. The 21-year-old Irish player, ranked 141st in the world, struggled to cope with Sindhu’s pace, precision and experience during the early stages.

The Indian star maintained control of the rallies and prevented Noble from developing any sustained attacking momentum. Although Noble eventually opened her account, the damage had already been done. Sindhu continued to dictate the exchanges and comfortably closed out the opening game 21-7.

The second game offered Noble a more encouraging start. The Irishwoman showed greater composure and remained within touching distance of Sindhu during the first half of the game. She went into the interval trailing by only three points, raising the possibility of a more competitive contest after the break.

Sindhu, however, quickly ended any hopes of a comeback.

The experienced Indian raised her intensity after the interval and won 10 of the next 13 points. Her decisive burst allowed her to create a substantial advantage and put the contest firmly beyond Noble’s reach. Sindhu eventually sealed the second game 21-11 to complete a comfortable opening-round victory.

The performance underlined the difference in experience between the two players. Sindhu, 31, is a former World Championships winner, having claimed the women’s singles title in Basel in 2019. She has also collected five World Championships medals during her distinguished career.

Her Olympic record further highlights her experience on the biggest stages. Sindhu won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics and bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games, establishing herself as one of India’s most successful badminton players.

For Noble, meanwhile, the match represented her first appearance at the World Championships. Despite showing greater resistance in the second game, she was unable to match Sindhu’s consistency and experience.

Sindhu will now face a significantly tougher challenge in the Round of 32. Her next opponent will be Canada’s World No. 49 Wen Yu Zhang, setting up a more demanding test as the Indian continues her bid for another deep run at the prestigious global tournament.

Sindhu was among three Indian winners on the opening day of the championships.

In women’s doubles, India’s leading pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also progressed after defeating Spain’s Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez 21-9, 21-13. The Indian duo controlled the match and secured a comfortable straight-game victory. They will next face the 16th-seeded American combination of Lauren Lam and Allison Quynh Lee.

India also advanced in men’s doubles through M. R. Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan. Their opening-round contest against Ireland’s Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds ended prematurely after the Irish pair withdrew because of an injury. Arjun and Hariharan were leading 21-16, 6-4 when the match was stopped.

The Indian men’s doubles pair will now face the 15th-seeded Korean combination of Kang Min Hyuk and Ki Dong Ju.

With Sindhu, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, and Arjun and Hariharan all progressing, India enjoyed a positive start to its campaign at the 2026 Badminton World Championships.
