Agartala AMC Ward No. 5 distributed sewing machines to 100 women under the Mukhyamantri Skill Development Project (MMDUP) after successful tailoring training. The initiative promotes women’s empowerment, self-employment, financial independence, and sustainable livelihood opportunities, strengthening Tripura’s vision of an Atmanirbhar state.
In a major initiative aimed at strengthening women’s economic empowerment and promoting self-reliance, 100 women from Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Ward No. 5 received sewing machines under the Mukhyamantri Skill Development Project (MMDUP) on Monday. The programme marked another significant step by the Tripura Government towards creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through skill development and self-employment.
The sewing machine distribution programme was organised at Shyamali Bazar in Agartala, where Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder handed over the sewing machines to the beneficiaries. The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, Ward No. 5 Councillor Lata Nath, Director of the Directorate of Skill Development Pradip Krishnaraj, IAS, along with several officials and dignitaries.
The beneficiaries successfully completed a structured tailoring training programme under the Mukhyamantri Skill Development Project before receiving the sewing machines. The comprehensive course lasted for 50 days, covering 300 hours of practical and theoretical training in tailoring. During the training period, every participant also received a stipend of Rs 2,000, ensuring financial support while acquiring vocational skills.
Speaking at the programme, Mayor Dipak Majumder appreciated the efforts of the Directorate of Skill Development for implementing a meaningful initiative focused on women’s empowerment. He stated that providing vocational skills along with essential equipment would enable women to become financially independent by starting their own tailoring businesses or taking up self-employment opportunities.
He further said that the state government’s objective is not only to provide training but also to ensure that beneficiaries receive the necessary tools to convert their newly acquired skills into a sustainable source of income. According to him, such initiatives play a crucial role in improving household incomes while encouraging entrepreneurship among women.
The Mayor also announced that similar programmes would be expanded across all wards under the Agartala Municipal Corporation so that more women can benefit from skill-based livelihood opportunities. He expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly contribute to strengthening women’s participation in the local economy.
Officials from the Directorate of Skill Development highlighted that the programme aligns with the government’s broader vision of building an Atmanirbhar Tripura through skill development, employment generation, and entrepreneurship. By equipping trained women with sewing machines immediately after completing their courses, the government aims to bridge the gap between training and employment.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the sewing machines would help them establish home-based tailoring units and generate regular income for their families. Many said the initiative had provided them with renewed confidence and the opportunity to become self-reliant.
The successful implementation of the Mukhyamantri Skill Development Project in AMC Ward No. 5 reflects the Tripura Government’s continued commitment to empowering women through practical skills, financial assistance, and self-employment opportunities, paving the way for inclusive economic growth across the state.
