Tripura marks its first grand National Organ Donation Day 2026 with the “Angdaan – Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyan,” unveiling a roadmap for kidney, liver, heart, eye, and bone marrow transplant services while strengthening organ donation awareness, medical training, and healthcare infrastructure across the state.
Tripura ushered in a new chapter in its healthcare journey by hosting its first-ever grand observance of National Organ Donation Day 2026, launching an ambitious roadmap to strengthen organ donation awareness and establish advanced organ transplantation services across the state. The landmark programme, organized under the theme “Angdaan – Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyan,” was held at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala with enthusiastic participation from healthcare professionals, government officials, medical students, and social organizations.
The event marked a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare sector, highlighting the government’s commitment to building a robust organ donation ecosystem while expanding access to life-saving transplant services for patients in need.
Leading the programme, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte described the initiative as a transformational step for Tripura’s medical infrastructure. He emphasized that organ donation is not merely a medical procedure but a humanitarian mission capable of saving countless lives. According to him, awareness about organ donation must extend beyond hospitals and educational institutions to every household, village, and community so that the spirit of donating organs becomes an integral part of society.
Although Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha could not attend the programme due to official engagements outside the state, his message of encouragement was shared during the event. In his message, the Chief Minister urged all stakeholders to carry forward the campaign with dedication and ensure that awareness regarding organ donation reaches every section of society.
A major highlight of the programme was Tripura’s collaboration with the Mohan Foundation, one of India’s leading organizations promoting organ donation and transplantation. Through this partnership, doctors, surgeons, and paramedical professionals from the state are receiving specialized training to manage complex transplantation procedures. Hospital infrastructure is also being strengthened to create an efficient and transparent organ donation network capable of meeting national standards.
Officials informed that teams of medical professionals are being deputed to leading healthcare institutions outside the state for advanced training. This initiative is expected to enhance the expertise of Tripura’s healthcare workforce and prepare hospitals for sophisticated transplant procedures in the near future.
Sharing the state’s long-term vision, Kiran Gitte announced that Tripura intends to move beyond kidney transplantation by gradually introducing liver and heart transplant services. These advanced medical facilities are expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for critical treatment while significantly improving healthcare accessibility.
The Health Secretary also highlighted encouraging progress in eye donation initiatives. He noted that Tripura has already successfully conducted corneal transplant surgeries and currently operates an eye bank at IGM Hospital. To further improve efficiency and patient care, the eye bank will soon be shifted to GB Hospital, enabling enhanced services and better accessibility for patients requiring corneal transplantation.
Addressing the growing concern of corneal blindness, Gitte stressed that strengthening eye donation programmes and expanding corneal transplant facilities would provide renewed hope to individuals suffering from vision impairment. Increased public participation in eye donation campaigns, he said, would play a crucial role in restoring sight to many patients waiting for transplantation.
Another significant announcement during the programme was the state’s plan to establish bone marrow transplantation facilities at the cancer hospital. Once operational, the facility is expected to offer advanced treatment options for patients battling blood cancers and other serious hematological disorders, reducing dependence on healthcare institutions outside Tripura.
“Every step in organ donation and transplantation is not just about saving lives today—it is about building a healthier, stronger, and more resilient Tripura for tomorrow,” Gitte remarked while outlining the government’s comprehensive healthcare vision.
Medical experts attending the event emphasized that timely organ donation has the potential to save multiple lives and significantly improve the quality of life for patients suffering from organ failure. They also encouraged citizens to voluntarily register as organ donors and support awareness campaigns aimed at dispelling myths surrounding organ donation.
