The Zubeen Garg death case trial in Assam progressed as five more prosecution witnesses testified before a Guwahati court. Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar confirmed ongoing evidence recording. Meanwhile, the Gauhati High Court has sought case records in connection with accused Siddhartha Sarma’s bail-related petition.
The judicial proceedings in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case continued on Tuesday, with five additional prosecution witnesses appearing before a court in Guwahati. The latest round of testimonies marks another significant development in a case that has attracted widespread public attention across Assam and the Northeast since the death of the celebrated Assamese singer last year.
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar confirmed that five prosecution witnesses were examined during the day’s proceedings. According to him, the process of recording evidence is progressing steadily, and several more witnesses are expected to testify in the coming hearings as the trial moves forward.
“The trial is continuing, and today five witnesses were examined by the court. The process of recording evidence is underway,” Kamar said while briefing the media outside the courtroom.
The ongoing trial is considered one of the most closely followed criminal proceedings in Assam due to the prominence of the late singer and the serious nature of the allegations surrounding his death. Legal observers say the testimony of witnesses will play a crucial role in helping the court determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
Apart from the witness examination, attention also remains focused on developments related to the bail plea of Siddhartha Sarma, a former manager of Zubeen Garg and one of the principal accused in the case. Kamar informed that the Gauhati High Court has fixed a future date for hearing a petition connected to the matter and has directed that relevant case records be produced before the court.
According to the prosecutor, the High Court sought the records before scheduling the matter for further consideration. The development comes shortly after Sarma’s earlier bail plea failed to secure a substantive hearing before the High Court.
Sarma had approached the Gauhati High Court after a Fast Track Court rejected his bail application. The lower court reportedly cited the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing stage of the investigation while denying the request for bail.
The case stems from the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who died on September 19 last year while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore. The incident occurred just one day before he was scheduled to perform at an event organised under the North East International Festival (NEIF) banner.
Following the singer’s death, the Assam Police Crime Investigation Department (CID) constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the incident. After months of investigation, the SIT submitted a chargesheet naming seven accused individuals in connection with the case.
Notably, four of the seven accused have been charged with murder, making the case one of the most serious criminal investigations involving a prominent public figure in recent years. The chargesheet and witness testimonies are expected to form the backbone of the prosecution’s case as the trial progresses.

With evidence recording continuing and further hearings scheduled in the coming weeks, the court proceedings are likely to remain under close public and media scrutiny. The outcome of the case is expected to have significant legal and public interest implications, given Zubeen Garg’s immense popularity and cultural influence across Assam and the wider Northeast region.
