Teliamura MLA Kalyani Roy’s surprise inspection at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital exposed alleged administrative lapses, staff absenteeism, Ayushman Bharat scheme irregularities, and poor patient services. SDMO Raja Jamatia reportedly broke into tears while answering questions as the MLA vowed to raise the issues before higher authorities.

A surprise inspection conducted by local MLA Kalyani Roy at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital on Saturday exposed a series of alleged administrative irregularities, staff absenteeism, and shortcomings in patient care, leading to an emotional scene in which Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) Raja Jamatia reportedly broke into tears while responding to questions raised by the legislator.

The inspection was carried out following repeated complaints from local residents regarding the quality of healthcare services being provided at the hospital. According to MLA Kalyani Roy, concerns had been mounting over poor patient care, administrative inefficiency, and irregularities in the implementation of welfare schemes, including the Ayushman Bharat programme.

Sources said the MLA decided to personally visit the hospital after receiving numerous reports from patients and their families regarding inadequate medical attention and delays in the delivery of healthcare benefits. Allegations were also raised that a significant amount of welfare funds intended for patient services had been returned due to the hospital administration’s inability to properly utilise the resources.

During her visit, Roy reportedly found several of the complaints to be genuine. She observed that a number of staff members, including Operation Theatre (OT) In-charge Samir Debbarma, were absent from duty. According to witnesses, no satisfactory explanation could be provided regarding their absence, which further intensified concerns about the functioning of the institution.

The MLA also questioned officials associated with the Ayushman Bharat scheme over alleged lapses in handling and disbursing benefits meant for eligible patients. She reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the responses provided by the concerned authorities and accused them of failing to address public grievances effectively.

As the inspection progressed, Roy sought explanations from SDMO Raja Jamatia regarding the various allegations. However, according to those present, the responses failed to satisfy the legislator. Amid the tense exchange, Jamatia reportedly became emotional and broke into tears inside his office.

Addressing the media after the inspection, Roy stated that she had repeatedly communicated public concerns to the SDMO on earlier occasions but had seen little improvement in the hospital’s functioning.

“I have spoken to the SDMO several times regarding public grievances. I do not know whether my communications were taken seriously. During inspections conducted by senior departmental officials, he often remains absent. I have also come across instances where he was officially on leave, yet his signatures allegedly appeared on prescriptions issued to patients receiving OPD services. This raises serious questions and may constitute a violation of established procedures,” Roy said.

The MLA further alleged that the SDMO appeared more focused on OPD consultations than on managing the hospital’s administrative affairs. She expressed concern that the institution’s overall functioning had suffered as a result.

Roy asserted that all issues uncovered during the inspection, including staff absenteeism, alleged administrative failures, and concerns surrounding healthcare delivery, would be brought to the notice of the appropriate authorities for necessary action.

“We cannot allow such a situation to continue. Patients deserve proper healthcare services and accountability from those responsible for managing public institutions,” she said.
