AMC reviews preparations for the Mayer Gomon Carnival on October 23, focusing on safe Durga idol immersion, traffic management, crowd control, emergency services, electricity supply and coordination among departments to ensure a smooth and secure Sharadotsav celebration.

The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified preparations for the upcoming Mayer Gomon Carnival, scheduled for October 23, with a focus on ensuring safe Durga idol immersion, effective traffic management and smooth coordination among various government departments during the Sharadotsav celebrations.

A crucial meeting was held at the AMC conference hall under the chairmanship of Mayor Dipak Majumder to review arrangements for the annual procession of Durga idols following the four-day Durga Puja celebrations. The meeting brought together Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, members of the Mayor-in-Council (MIC), zonal chairpersons and corporators.

West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, IAS, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Kanta Jangir and other senior officials from different departments also attended the meeting. Discussions focused on maintaining public safety, managing large gatherings and ensuring the peaceful and orderly immersion of Durga idols across Agartala.

The AMC has issued guidelines for Durga Puja committees participating in the Mayer Gomon Carnival. According to the arrangements announced by Mayor Majumder, each participating committee will be permitted a maximum of seven vehicles, including five large and two small vehicles. Each committee will also be allotted 10 minutes to present its performance before the designated stage.

The carnival will be organised in front of Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ School, the venue used for last year’s procession. The civic body expects participation to increase this year and has urged organisers to follow the prescribed rules and cooperate with the administration.

Traffic regulation and crowd management remain among the major priorities for the event. The AMC is coordinating with police and traffic authorities to ensure the orderly movement of procession vehicles and visitors. A dedicated corridor for ambulances is being planned to facilitate emergency medical services, while bamboo barricades are expected to be installed near City Centre to regulate crowds.

Additional police personnel are also expected to be deployed to strengthen security arrangements compared with last year. Officials are working to minimise traffic congestion and ensure that emergency vehicles can move without obstruction throughout the celebrations.

Uninterrupted electricity supply is another key aspect of the preparations. The power department has been asked to ensure a reliable supply during the carnival, while Durga Puja committees have been advised to arrange generators as backup facilities in case of power disruptions.

The civic body has also made arrangements for idol immersion at multiple locations across the city. Apart from Dashami Ghat, 16 additional immersion ghats have been arranged in different zones of Agartala to facilitate the smooth movement of processions and reduce pressure on individual locations.

Last year, approximately 600–700 Durga idols were immersed in Agartala, including nearly 342 at Dashami Ghat. Around 33 Durga Puja committees participated in the Mayer Gomon Carnival, according to information shared by the mayor. The AMC is preparing for potentially higher participation this year.

Several departments, including the Public Works Department, Urban Development Department, Tripura Urban Development Authority, Tripura Jal Board, AMC, police and traffic departments, along with district and sub-divisional administrations, are coordinating efforts to complete the necessary arrangements.

The mayor also encouraged Durga Puja organisers to participate in the Sharad Samman awards organised by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department and the corporation.

The AMC has appealed to Puja committees, organisers and residents to follow official guidelines and extend cooperation to the authorities. The civic body aims to ensure that the Mayer Gomon Carnival and the associated idol immersion activities are conducted safely, efficiently and without disruption, preserving the festive spirit of Sharadotsav across Agartala.
