Tripura CM Manik Saha inaugurated a new multi-level parking and commercial complex on Old Motor Stand Road in Agartala. Developed under the public-private partnership model, the facility aims to ease traffic congestion, improve parking management and create employment opportunities for local youth.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has said that the newly inaugurated multi-level car parking and commercial complex on Old Motor Stand Road will help reduce traffic congestion and address parking problems in Agartala while strengthening the city’s modern civic infrastructure.
Inaugurating the facility on Thursday, the Chief Minister said the project’s foundation stone was laid in 2022 and that he had repeatedly reviewed its progress to ensure completion within the stipulated timeframe. The complex has now been completed and opened for public use, marking a step towards improving urban traffic management.
According to Saha, the Old Motor Stand area had previously faced several problems, including disputes over land occupation and tensions between vehicle owners and workers. He said the government was working to improve the situation while protecting the interests of both groups.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the government was not against workers or vehicle owners. Instead, arrangements were being made to provide them with appropriate seating and parking facilities. He added that the government’s broader objective was to modernise Agartala and improve infrastructure and civic amenities across the state.
Highlighting the project’s financial structure, Saha said the multi-level parking and commercial complex had been developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. According to him, the project did not require direct government expenditure, while the private investment company offered a land premium in exchange for using the space. The arrangement is also expected to provide the government with a recurring annual income.
Saha said the new parking facility would help reduce roadside parking and improve the movement of vehicles across the city. He warned that legal action would be taken against illegal parking to maintain smooth traffic flow and prevent roads from becoming congested.
The Chief Minister also indicated that similar parking systems were planned for other parts of Agartala, suggesting that the government intended to expand organised parking infrastructure as the city continued to grow.
He further highlighted employment generation as one of the project’s key benefits, saying that the facility had created job opportunities for local youth.
During the programme, Saha also spoke about the ongoing construction of a large Unity Mall at Badharghat. He said the government had set a target to complete the project by March next year.
