India strengthened its defence diplomacy at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore as Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh held high-level meetings with defence leaders from Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the European Union, focusing on maritime security, military cooperation, defence technology, and Indo-Pacific stability.

India continued its strategic defence outreach on the global stage as Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh engaged in a series of high-level bilateral meetings with defence leaders from Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the European Union during the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Sunday.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral defence relations, enhancing maritime cooperation, improving information-sharing mechanisms, and reinforcing a shared commitment toward maintaining a secure, stable, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Singh’s engagements with the Defence Ministers of Singapore and New Zealand highlighted the growing importance of defence collaboration among like-minded nations amid evolving regional security challenges. The meetings emphasized deeper strategic cooperation, maritime security, and mechanisms for greater defence coordination.

The Shangri-La Dialogue, one of Asia’s most influential security forums, serves as a platform for defence ministers, military leaders, policymakers, and strategic experts from across the world to discuss regional and global security issues. The annual event also provides significant opportunities for bilateral and multilateral discussions among participating nations.

On Saturday, Singh attended a reception hosted at the Istana and met Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The interaction focused on strengthening bilateral strategic ties and advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest between India and Singapore. The meeting underscored the strong and expanding relationship between the two countries, particularly in defence, trade, and regional security.

In another important engagement, Singh met Sweden’s State Secretary to the Minister of Defence, Peter Sandwall. The discussions explored ways to strengthen India-Sweden defence cooperation, with particular attention given to defence technology, innovation, and future collaborative opportunities.

The Ministry of Defence stated that both sides examined avenues to enhance defence engagement and promote cooperation in advanced technological sectors. The dialogue reflected the increasing significance of innovation-driven partnerships in modern defence strategies.

Singh also held talks with General Onno Eichelsheim, Chief of Defence of the Netherlands. The discussions centred on expanding bilateral military cooperation through exchange programmes, joint training exercises, and enhanced defence engagement. Both sides expressed interest in broadening military-to-military interactions and strengthening operational collaboration.

Further advancing India’s strategic outreach, Singh met Belen Martinez Carbonell, Secretary General of the European External Action Service, and Lieutenant General Enrico Barduani, Deputy Chair of the European Union Military Committee. The meetings focused on advancing strategic dialogue between India and the European Union, addressing shared security concerns and exploring new opportunities for defence and strategic cooperation.

The Defence Ministry noted that these discussions reflected the growing convergence between India and the European Union on regional and global security issues. Both sides emphasized the importance of closer cooperation in addressing emerging security challenges and maintaining stability in the international order.

Continuing his engagements, Singh held discussions with Netherlands Defence Minister Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius. The talks focused on enhancing bilateral defence cooperation, strengthening military ties, and exploring opportunities for defence industrial collaboration. The meeting highlighted the evolving strategic partnership between India and the Netherlands and the increasing scope for cooperation in defence manufacturing and technology.

In addition, Singh met Australian Defence Secretary Meghan Quinn. The two leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and discussed upcoming high-level engagements. They also explored ways to further strengthen defence cooperation across areas of mutual interest, reflecting the deepening strategic relationship between New Delhi and Canberra.
