Tripura witnesses another sharp rise in CNG and PNG prices as TNGCL revises fuel rates for the fourth time in ten days, increasing pressure on transport operators, households, and middle-class consumers struggling with rising daily expenses.
Consumers across Tripura are once again facing increased financial pressure following another hike in compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) prices. The latest revision, announced by Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL), will come into effect from May 27, 2026, marking the fourth fuel price increase within just ten days.
The repeated rise in fuel prices has sparked concern among households, transport operators, and small business owners, many of whom say they are already struggling with the increasing cost of living and essential commodities.
According to the official notification signed by TNGCL Manager P. Bhattacharjee, CNG prices in West Tripura have been raised from Rs 85.15 per kilogram to Rs 87.15 per kilogram. In Gomati district, the revised price now stands at Rs 91.95 per kilogram, up from Rs 89.95.
PNG consumers are also expected to feel the impact of the latest increase. Domestic PNG users in West Tripura will now pay Rs 45.88 instead of Rs 44.41, while government residential quarters in the district will be charged Rs 50.43 compared to the previous Rs 49.12.
In Gomati district, domestic PNG rates have increased from Rs 48.53 to Rs 49.99. Government quarters there will now pay Rs 54.99, up from Rs 53.53.
Commercial and industrial sectors have not been spared from the revision. In West Tripura, commercial and industrial PNG rates have risen from Rs 56.23 to Rs 57.45. In Gomati, the price has gone up from Rs 53.57 to Rs 54.28. At the Bodhjungnagar Industrial Growth Centre, the revised rate now stands at Rs 43.63, compared to the earlier Rs 42.90.
The repeated hikes have triggered widespread frustration among CNG vehicle operators, particularly auto-rickshaw drivers, who argue that operational costs are rising steadily while passenger fares remain unchanged. Many drivers said the situation is becoming unsustainable as fuel expenses continue to climb without corresponding income growth.
Residents and middle-class families have also expressed concern over the growing burden on monthly household budgets. With transport expenses, cooking fuel costs, and prices of daily essentials rising simultaneously, many consumers fear further economic strain in the coming weeks.
