Ashmita Chaliha advanced to the Malaysia Masters 2026 quarterfinals with a commanding straight-game victory, while Malvika Bansod and other Indian shuttlers exited the BWF Super 500 tournament in Kuala Lumpur after tough second-round defeats.
India’s campaign at the Malaysia Masters 2026 received a major boost after Ashmita Chaliha advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinals with an impressive straight-game victory at the Stadium Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. The Indian shuttler defeated Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei 21-13, 21-16 in a dominant performance that lasted just 27 minutes.
Coming through the qualifiers, Ashmita displayed excellent control and composure against the World No. 55. She dictated the pace from the very beginning, taking charge of the opening game with aggressive rallies and precise shot placement. The Indian player hardly gave her Malaysian opponent any room to recover, sealing the first game comfortably.
The second game witnessed a stronger response from Jin Wei, who attempted to reduce the deficit with a series of attacking exchanges. However, Ashmita remained focused and maintained her rhythm throughout the contest. Her sharp net play and defensive consistency ensured that the Malaysian could not build any momentum, allowing the Indian shuttler to close out the match in straight games.
With this victory, Ashmita reached the quarterfinals of a BWF Super 500 event for the third time in her career, underlining her growing consistency on the international circuit. She will now face Denmark’s eighth-seeded Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt in the next round. The Danish star entered the quarterfinals after defeating two Indian players, including Malvika Bansod and Anmol Kharb.
Malvika’s campaign ended in disappointment despite a promising start against Kjaersfeldt. The Indian shuttler captured the opening game 21-16 but failed to maintain her momentum as the Danish Olympian fought back strongly to win 16-21, 21-8, 21-15. It marked Kjaersfeldt’s second victory over Malvika in three meetings.
India also suffered setbacks in other categories during the second round. Devika Sihag exited the women’s singles after losing 21-16, 21-13 to top-seeded Chinese star and former Olympic champion Chen Yufei.
In men’s doubles, India’s only remaining pair, MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan, bowed out after a 21-14, 21-15 defeat against China’s Hu Keyuan and Lin Xiangyi.
The mixed doubles challenge also came to an end as Sathwik Reddy Kanapuram and Radhika Sharma were beaten 12-21, 25-27 by the American duo of Presley Smith and Jennie Gai.
