Mamata Banerjee refuses to resign after Trinamool Congress (TMC) defeat, alleging vote manipulation and targeting Election Commission. She calls for strengthening INDIA Bloc as opposition leaders express solidarity, intensifying political tensions in West Bengal after controversial election results.

Refusing to step down despite a major electoral setback, Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday asserted that she would not resign as Chief Minister, arguing that the recent assembly election results do not reflect the true mandate of the people. Her remarks came a day after the All India Trinamool Congress suffered a significant defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata alongside party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and members of her outgoing cabinet, Banerjee strongly dismissed calls for her resignation. She maintained that the outcome was marred by alleged irregularities and could not be considered a genuine reflection of public opinion.

“Why should I resign? This is not a real defeat. The results are influenced by large-scale misappropriation and vote manipulation,” she said, reiterating her stance that the electoral process had been compromised.

Banerjee further intensified her criticism by targeting the Election Commission of India, alleging that the body played a central role in what she described as a flawed electoral exercise. According to her, the Commission’s actions during the Special Intensive Revision process deprived many voters of their democratic rights. She also accused the poll body of administrative interference, including the replacement of key state officials ahead of the elections.

In a sharp escalation of her allegations, Banerjee claimed there was a coordinated effort involving the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre and the Election Commission. She suggested that top leadership at the national level was directly involved in influencing the election outcome, though no independent verification of these claims has been presented.

The outgoing Chief Minister also alleged personal misconduct during the vote-counting process, claiming she was physically pushed when she visited a counting centre as a candidate. This claim, if substantiated, could raise serious concerns about security and protocol adherence during the counting phase.

Despite the electoral loss, Banerjee struck a defiant tone and shifted focus toward national politics. She emphasized the need to strengthen the opposition alliance, commonly referred to as the INDIA Bloc, in order to mount a stronger challenge against the National Democratic Alliance-led government at the Centre.

She revealed that several prominent opposition leaders had reached out to her following the results, expressing solidarity and support. Among those she named were Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, and Hemant Soren.

“The opposition will grow stronger in the coming days. Leaders will meet and coordinate efforts to consolidate our position nationally,” Banerjee stated, indicating that discussions and meetings among alliance partners are expected soon.

Political analysts suggest that Banerjee’s refusal to resign signals a strategic move to maintain leadership within her party while repositioning herself as a key figure in national opposition politics. However, the allegations raised against the electoral process are likely to spark further debate and may invite scrutiny from constitutional authorities.
