Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 87 powers Chennai Super Kings to dominant eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026 match 48, boosting playoff hopes with a clinical chase and strong bowling performance in New Delhi clash.
A composed and authoritative batting display guided Chennai Super Kings to a convincing victory in a crucial Indian Premier League encounter, as a dominant unbeaten innings ensured a smooth chase under pressure at a packed stadium in the national capital.
In match 48 of Indian Premier League 2026, Sanju Samson delivered one of the standout performances of the season, scoring a remarkable 87 not out off 52 balls to lead Chennai Super Kings to an emphatic eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.
Chasing a modest target of 156 on a pitch that initially offered grip and turn, Chennai showed patience early on before accelerating with precision. Samson anchored the innings with a blend of elegance and power, striking seven boundaries and clearing the ropes six times. His innings was marked by exceptional control and calculated aggression, especially as conditions improved for batting.
The foundation for the win, however, was laid earlier by Chennai’s disciplined bowling unit. Noor Ahmad returned impressive figures of 2-22, while Akeal Hosein kept things tight with 1-19. Their efforts restricted Delhi to 155/7 in 20 overs, a total that looked slightly below par despite useful contributions from Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs.
Delhi’s innings never quite gained full momentum, with Chennai’s spinners exploiting the sluggish nature of the surface. Regular breakthroughs ensured that the hosts were unable to capitalize during the middle overs, leaving them with a defendable but challenging total.
In reply, Chennai began cautiously. Samson looked assured from the outset, lofting Axar Patel for an early six to signal intent. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad had a fortunate boundary early on but struggled to find rhythm before falling cheaply to Lungi Ngidi.
The innings saw a brief burst of aggression from Urvil Patel, whose quick-fire sixes added momentum before he was dismissed by Axar. At that stage, Chennai were steady but still required consolidation.
That stability came through an outstanding unbeaten partnership between Samson and Kartik Sharma. The duo added 114 runs in just 66 balls, effectively taking the game away from Delhi. Kartik Sharma played the perfect supporting role, finishing unbeaten on 41 off 31 deliveries, rotating strike efficiently and punishing loose balls.
As the pitch eased, Samson shifted gears seamlessly. He targeted Delhi’s key bowlers, including Kuldeep Yadav and T Natarajan, with a mix of innovative stroke play and brute force. His calculated assault included towering sixes and crisp drives that energized the crowd and deflated the opposition.
Samson reached his half-century in just 32 balls, maintaining a high strike rate while ensuring there were no risks taken unnecessarily. His ability to read the game and adapt to conditions stood out as a defining feature of the innings.
Despite attempts by Mitchell Starc to pull things back, Samson remained unfazed, dispatching even well-executed deliveries to the boundary. His dominance ensured that Chennai completed the chase comfortably in 17.3 overs, with 15 balls to spare.

The victory takes Chennai to ten points in the standings, placing them sixth but within striking distance of the top five in what has become a tightly contested tournament. For Delhi, the loss highlights ongoing inconsistencies, particularly in defending totals on challenging surfaces.
With the league stage entering a decisive phase, this result could prove crucial for Chennai’s playoff ambitions. Samson’s performance not only secured two valuable points but also reinforced his status as one of the most dependable performers in the competition.
