Aizawl FC secure survival with dramatic 2-2 draw against Gokulam Kerala FC in IFL 2025-26 relegation clash, leaving Gokulam’s fate uncertain ahead of a crucial final match while Real Kashmir also confirm league safety.
A fiercely contested encounter in Hyderabad delivered high drama and significant implications in the relegation battle of the Indian Football League 2025–26 season, as Aizawl FC secured survival with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Gokulam Kerala FC on Tuesday.
Played at the Deccan Arena, the match showcased resilience and attacking intent from both sides. While Aizawl FC managed to avoid relegation with this result, Gokulam Kerala FC remain in danger, with their fate hinging on the final fixture against Namdhari FC.
Aizawl FC’s tally now stands at 13 points from 11 matches, ensuring their place in the league for next season. Meanwhile, Gokulam Kerala FC, stuck on nine points, must secure a positive result in their last game to stand any chance of survival. The outcome also confirmed safety for Real Kashmir FC, who benefited indirectly from the draw.
The match began with high intensity, as both teams adopted an aggressive approach from the outset. Aizawl FC struck first in the 10th minute through Zomuansanga, who demonstrated composure and creativity inside the box. With a clever shoulder feint, he deceived goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil before placing a powerful shot into the far corner, registering his fifth goal of the campaign.
Gokulam Kerala FC, however, responded swiftly. In the 17th minute, Mirjalol Kasimov produced a moment of brilliance, unleashing a powerful free-kick that left the Aizawl goalkeeper with no chance. The equaliser injected fresh momentum into the contest, turning the match into an end-to-end spectacle.
Despite the equaliser, Aizawl FC continued to look threatening in transitions. Their persistence paid off in the 32nd minute when a defensive lapse by Lalbiakhlua inside the penalty area resulted in a spot-kick. Zomuansanga stepped up once again and calmly converted, restoring his side’s lead and completing his brace.
The first half remained unpredictable, with Gokulam Kerala FC capitalising on set-piece situations. Just before the interval, in the 43rd minute, Gursimrat Singh found the equaliser with a well-placed header following a free-kick routine. The Aizawl goalkeeper was caught off guard, allowing Gokulam to level the score at 2-2 heading into halftime.
The opening half also saw a setback for Gokulam Kerala FC, as injuries forced them into multiple substitutions, including the replacement of goalkeeper Shibinraj Kunniyil with Kamaludheen A.K. Despite these disruptions, Gokulam entered the break with renewed confidence after recovering twice.
The second half witnessed a noticeable dip in tempo, as both sides struggled to maintain the earlier intensity. However, Aizawl FC gradually regained control, dominating possession and pushing forward in search of a decisive third goal. Their attacking efforts intensified in the final 30 minutes, but they were repeatedly denied by Kamaludheen, who delivered a series of crucial saves to keep his team in the contest.
Gokulam Kerala FC nearly snatched victory late in the game. In the 86th minute, substitute Benjamin Thomas Kuku created a golden opportunity for Thabiso Brown with a precise setup. However, Brown’s attempt—an ambitious acrobatic back-volley—failed to find the target, allowing Aizawl FC to escape unscathed.
The closing stages were tense, with nine minutes of stoppage time adding to the drama. Both teams battled hard, but neither could break the deadlock, and the referee’s final whistle confirmed a 2-2 draw—an outcome that reflected the balance of play.
