Gunshots at White House Correspondents’ Dinner spark panic as Trump, Melania, and VP Vance are evacuated safely. PM Modi condemns violence, suspect arrested, and US security agencies respond swiftly to the Washington D.C. shooting incident.
A tense evening in Washington turned into a high-alert security situation after gunshots disrupted one of the most prominent annual gatherings of political leaders and journalists in the United States, prompting swift action from federal agencies and triggering international reactions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed relief after learning that US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President J. D. Vance were unharmed following a shooting incident that occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.
The incident unfolded late Saturday night (local time) at the Washington Hilton, where hundreds of high-profile attendees had gathered for the annual event. Reports of multiple gunshots sent shockwaves through the venue, causing panic among guests, many of whom sought cover under tables as security personnel moved swiftly to secure the area.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Modi condemned the violence and emphasized democratic values. He stated that such acts have no place in a democratic society and must be unequivocally rejected. He also extended his best wishes for the continued safety and well-being of the US leadership.
According to eyewitness accounts, between five and eight gunshots were heard inside or near the venue, prompting an immediate lockdown. Secret Service agents and other law enforcement personnel rushed into the banquet hall, evacuating attendees in a controlled but urgent manner. National Guard personnel were later deployed within the premises to reinforce security.
President Trump later confirmed that he and other key officials were safe, crediting the rapid response of the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies. In a post on Truth Social, he described the situation as “quite an evening” and praised the bravery and efficiency of the security forces. He also revealed that the suspect had been apprehended and indicated that authorities would decide whether the event could proceed.
The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California. Law enforcement officials believe he acted alone. Authorities reported that Allen attempted to breach a security checkpoint while armed with multiple weapons. During the confrontation, he fired several rounds before being subdued by security personnel just meters away from the main ballroom.
Federal investigators have since taken the suspect into custody and are pursuing multiple charges related to firearms possession and the attack. Officials are currently examining his background and searching his residence in California to determine any potential motives or affiliations.
While initial assessments suggest a lone-wolf attack, authorities have not ruled out any possibilities and are continuing a thorough investigation. President Trump, addressing reporters, described the attacker as “a sick person” and noted that more information would be revealed as the inquiry progresses.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over security arrangements at high-profile political events in the United States, especially those attended by top leadership and global media. Despite the robust presence of security agencies, the breach attempt highlights evolving threats and the need for constant vigilance.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, traditionally seen as a platform for political satire and media engagement, took a dramatically different turn this year. What was expected to be an evening of speeches and light-hearted exchanges instead became a stark reminder of the persistent challenges to public safety in high-security environments.
Authorities have assured the public that the situation is fully under control and that there is no ongoing threat. However, the investigation remains active, with federal agencies working to piece together the sequence of events and establish a clear motive behind the attack.
