Tripura government renames Khowai Government Girls’ School after Dr HS Roy Choudhury, honoring the eminent surgeon, BJP leader, and social reformer whose contributions in healthcare, politics, and education continue to inspire future generations across the state.

The Government of Tripura has announced the renaming of Khowai Government Girls Higher Secondary School (Vidyajyoti School) as “Dr HS Roy Choudhury Memorial Institution”, marking a tribute to the eminent surgeon and also former BJP state president.
The decision, formalized through a notification issued by the Directorate of Secondary Education (Statistics Section), takes immediate effect. Authorities have been instructed to update all official records and ensure compliance with the directive.

Located in Khowai district, the school has long been regarded as a cornerstone of girls’ education in Tripura. The renaming is seen as a symbolic gesture to honor late Dr Hemendu Shankar Roy Choudhury, popularly known as Dr HS Roy Choudhury, and also as ‘Doctor –da’ to his junior medical fraternity. He also served as state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the late 1990s and played a pivotal role in strengthening the party’s organizational base in Tripura.

Dr Roy Choudhury along with his wife played a key role as surgeon in the GB Hospital during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. He along with Dr Rathin Datta, Dr SB Datta, Dr A Majumdar et al attended thousands of Mukti Yuddhas and Indian soldiers wounded in the war. He was also a colourful personality and closely involved in various fields of arts and culture.
Officials noted that the move reflects the government’s broader initiative to commemorate individuals who shaped the state’s political and social framework, ensuring their legacy is remembered by future generations.
Community members and alumni welcomed the announcement, describing it as a fitting recognition of Dr Roy Choudhury’s public service and leadership.

Dr. Roy Choudhury believed that a strong society needed both health and education. Beyond the operating theater, Dr. Roy Choudhury was a man of letters and social conscience. His writings often reflected his observations on society and his vision for a developed Tripura. As a philanthropist and social activist, he worked quietly but effectively to uplift the marginalized, believing that health and education were the twin pillars of a strong society.

Following his retirement from active medical service, Dr. Roy Choudhury took a path that few expected at the time: he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

During his tenure as the State President of BJP Tripura, the party had almost no footprint in a state dominated by  Left political ideology. Undeterred by the lack of an existing base, he and his close political associates worked with missionary zeal. They traveled to the remotest corners of the state, building the party’s foundation stone by stone. His transition from a respected doctor to a political leader lent the party a much-needed sense of credibility .

Girls’ High School as the Dr. H. S. Roy Choudhury Memorial Institution “
