Tipra Motha workers take control of Chabimura tourism site, creating panic among tourists and halting activities. Administrative dispute over TTAADC jurisdiction raises uncertainty, forcing visitors to cancel trips and impacting Tripura’s growing tourism sector significantly.

A sudden takeover of a prominent tourism site in Tripura has disrupted operations and raised concerns over visitor safety and administrative control. Hundreds of workers affiliated with the regional political party Tipra Motha on Saturday forcefully assumed control of the Chabimura tourism management office, triggering chaos and uncertainty among tourists and local stakeholders.

The incident occurred at Chabimura, a scenic destination known for its ancient rock carvings and riverine beauty. Supporters of Tipra Motha locked the main gate of the management office, preventing entry of members from the existing committee. They asserted that the site falls under the jurisdiction of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council and, therefore, should be managed by the ruling party within the council.

Eyewitnesses described a tense atmosphere as the situation escalated, leaving tourists alarmed. Many visitors, including families and out-of-state travelers, reported panic and confusion as news of the aggressive takeover spread rapidly across social media and television channels. Several tourists chose to cancel or postpone their planned visits, particularly those scheduled for Sunday and the upcoming May Day holiday.

Chabimura, nestled amid dense forests and located along a winding river often likened to the Amazon of Tripura, has grown into one of the state’s key tourism attractions in recent years. The site features massive 15th–16th century rock carvings of Hindu deities, including a striking 20-foot-high image of Goddess Durga, etched into steep sandstone cliffs. Visitors typically access the carvings through long boat rides, adding to the allure of the destination.

The current dispute stems from longstanding disagreements over administrative control. A representative of the Tipra Motha workers stated that since 2018, a committee allegedly comprising leaders from another political party has been overseeing the site’s management. They argued that with the area falling under TTAADC jurisdiction, authority should rest with the ADC’s ruling party.

Following the escalation, local police intervened to restore order. Authorities facilitated a temporary resolution by handing over the office keys to the Tipra Motha workers while urging restraint from all sides. Officials confirmed that a crucial meeting has been scheduled at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office on April 28 to determine the future management structure and resolve the dispute.

Meanwhile, regular activities at the tourism site remained suspended throughout the day. Reports indicated that several tourists en route to Chabimura turned back midway, fearing possible violence or further unrest. Local businesses dependent on tourism also expressed concern over the sudden halt in operations, warning of economic repercussions if the situation persists.

The tourism department had previously collaborated with a self-help group to manage the site efficiently, contributing to its growing popularity. However, the current standoff has cast a shadow over Chabimura’s reputation as a peaceful and attractive destination.

As authorities prepare for the upcoming meeting, stakeholders hope for a swift and amicable resolution that ensures both administrative clarity and the safety of visitors.
