Tripura government strengthens NCD screening drive with STAR NCD project, expanding free treatment, advanced diagnostics, AI-based monitoring, and statewide patient tracking to combat rising lifestyle diseases and ensure universal healthcare coverage across urban and rural regions.

Efforts to strengthen public health systems in Tripura gained fresh momentum as the state government reaffirmed its commitment to universal screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The renewed focus was highlighted during a high-level review meeting of the STAR NCD research project held at the State Secretariat on Friday, where senior officials, healthcare professionals, and institutional partners assessed progress and outlined future strategies.

The STAR NCD initiative, a collaborative effort involving leading national and state-level health institutions, is designed to enhance the delivery of services under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. The project targets major lifestyle-related illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and certain cancers, which are increasingly contributing to the disease burden in the region.

Officials at the meeting reported measurable progress across multiple fronts. Free distribution of essential medicines for hypertension and diabetes has been scaled up significantly, ensuring wider access to treatment for vulnerable populations. Diagnostic capabilities have also been strengthened with the installation of semi-automatic analyzers at Block Public Health Units, enabling faster and more accurate testing at the grassroots level.

A structured supervisory mechanism has been introduced to maintain quality standards in healthcare delivery. Additionally, Panchayati Raj Institutions have been actively involved in monitoring services, reflecting a decentralized and community-driven approach to public health governance.

Authorities revealed that the next phase of the initiative will focus on expanding screening coverage to include the entire population. This will be supported by a digital, portal-based patient tracking system aimed at improving follow-up care and ensuring continuity in treatment. The integration of advanced technologies is also on the agenda, with plans to introduce artificial intelligence in hospital management systems. This move is expected to streamline the monitoring of medicine supplies and reduce the risk of stock shortages.

Members of the STAR NCD team stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted availability of essential medicines, a critical factor in managing chronic conditions effectively. They also acknowledged the positive impact of the Mukhyamantri Niramoy Arogya Abhiyan, which has played a key role in early detection and timely treatment, particularly in remote urban clusters and hilly terrains where access to healthcare remains a challenge.

The National Health Mission, Tripura, in an official press release, described the developments as a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing battle against non-communicable diseases. With a combination of policy commitment, technological integration, and community participation, Tripura is positioning itself to achieve comprehensive screening coverage and improved health outcomes for its population.
