Tripura administration bans candle lighting at Tripura Sundari Temple in Gomati district citing fire hazards. Devotees advised to use diyas and loose agarbattis under strict safety guidelines to ensure public safety and preserve temple premises.

Restrictions on candle lighting have been imposed at the revered Tripura Sundari Temple following safety concerns raised by the district administration. The move, announced by officials in Gomati district, aims to prevent potential fire hazards within the temple premises, which witness a heavy influx of devotees daily.

According to an official notification, the use of candles has been strictly prohibited inside the temple complex. Authorities cited the presence of a large tree located close to designated candle-lighting areas as a significant risk factor. With open flames frequently used by worshippers, the likelihood of accidental fires has become a growing concern. The administration warned that such incidents could not only endanger public safety but also disrupt religious activities and damage the historic structure.

Despite the restriction on candles, devotees will still be permitted to offer prayers using agarbattis, but under revised guidelines. The administration clarified that only loose incense sticks will be allowed inside the premises, and devotees will not be permitted to carry full packets of agarbattis into the temple complex. This measure is intended to regulate usage and reduce clutter or misuse in crowded areas.

In place of candles, authorities have encouraged the use of traditional oil lamps, commonly known as diyas, which are considered both safer and culturally appropriate. However, the use of diyas will also be restricted to specific designated zones and must comply with safety protocols issued by temple authorities.

The administration has further directed shopkeepers operating within and around the temple premises to immediately stop selling candles. Vendors have instead been advised to stock and promote approved alternatives such as diyas and other prayer-related items that align with safety norms. Officials believe that this step will help reinforce the implementation of the new regulations while supporting local businesses in adapting to the changes.

The decision comes in response to the increasing number of devotees visiting the temple each day, many of whom traditionally light candles alongside agarbattis as part of their offerings. With the temple being one of the most significant religious sites in the region, ensuring the safety of visitors and preserving the sanctity of the premises has been prioritized.

Authorities have emphasized that the new measures are not intended to disrupt religious practices but to ensure that they are carried out in a safe and controlled environment. Devotees have been urged to cooperate with the new guidelines and follow instructions issued by temple officials and security personnel.

The restrictions have come into effect immediately, and officials have warned that non-compliance may lead to further action. The administration reiterated its commitment to maintaining order, safety, and the preservation of the temple’s heritage while allowing devotees to continue their spiritual practices without risk.
