Father of Tripura student Anjel Chakma alleges Uttarakhand Police inaction and collusion as main accused Yagyaraj Awasthi remains absconding in Nepal months after fatal racial assault in Dehradun, raising serious concerns over justice, investigation delays, and accountability.
A grieving father has raised serious allegations of police inaction and possible collusion following the killing of his son, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, in an alleged racial assault in Dehradun. The case, which has triggered concerns over justice delivery and cross-border escape of accused persons, remains unresolved months after the incident.
Anjel Chakma, a resident of Tripura’s Unakoti district, succumbed to injuries on December 26, 2025, after being brutally attacked earlier that month in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. According to reports, the assault occurred on December 9 after the student objected to racial slurs directed at him and his younger brother.
Four months after the incident, the victim’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, has publicly accused the Uttarakhand Police of negligence and failure to apprehend the main accused. Speaking to media in Dehradun, he claimed that the primary suspect, Yagyaraj Awasthi, has managed to evade arrest and is believed to have fled to Nepal.
The bereaved father alleged that there has been no meaningful progress in tracking the suspect. He further claimed that law enforcement authorities have not conducted any active operation to locate or extradite the accused. According to him, administrative lapses allowed Awasthi, reportedly a resident of Nepal’s Kanchanpur region, to cross the border after the incident.
Adding to the gravity of the accusations, Chakma alleged that the police delayed filing a First Information Report (FIR) and only acted after intervention by a Member of Parliament. He also raised concerns about possible collusion between local authorities and the accused, a claim that has intensified scrutiny of the investigation.
Officials, however, maintain that efforts are ongoing. Vivek Singh Kutiyal confirmed that five out of the six accused individuals have been arrested, including two minors. He stated that a lookout circular (LOC) had been issued in January to track the absconding suspect. Additionally, a Blue Corner notice has been processed, while steps are underway to secure a Red Corner notice through international channels.
The case has drawn attention not only due to its alleged racial dimension but also because of the victim’s promising future. Anjel Chakma had recently secured an MBA placement with an annual package of Rs 12 lakh and was scheduled to begin his internship on December 27, just a day after his death. His father, who has served in the Border Security Force for three decades, spoke about the sacrifices made to support his son’s education.

The emotional toll on the family has been severe. Chakma revealed that his younger son, currently pursuing graduation in Uttarakhand, has been deeply affected by the incident and remains withdrawn. While the family has received Rs 8.25 lakh as compensation from the Social Welfare Department, they continue to demand justice and accountability.
As the investigation continues, questions remain over the effectiveness of law enforcement mechanisms in handling crimes involving interstate and international dimensions. The case has underscored the urgency of ensuring timely justice and addressing allegations of systemic lapses.
