Former BJP MP Tarun Vijay meets Anjel Chakma’s family, assures justice, demands strict punishment for perpetrators, and highlights national unity following the killing of the 24-year-old MBA student, triggering nationwide outrage and solidarity across Uttarakhand and Tripura.
Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament and senior party leader Tarun Vijay on Friday visited the bereaved family of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student who lost his life following a brutal assault. Vijay assured the family that all possible measures would be taken to ensure strict punishment for those responsible for the crime, asserting that the entire state of Uttarakhand stands united with the grieving family.
Tarun Vijay, who also runs an educational institute in Dehradun dedicated to students from tribal communities, particularly from the North Eastern states, personally met Anjel Chakma’s parents at their village. Expressing deep sorrow, Vijay described the pain of a father who sent his son outside the state with dreams of success, only to receive his mortal remains in return.
“I have come here to share the grief of the bereaved family. I met Anjel’s parents today and witnessed their unimaginable pain. The emotional trauma of losing a young son under such circumstances cannot be described in words,” Vijay said. He added that he had already spoken with Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and the Governor of Tripura to apprise them of the situation.
According to Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tripura has been in constant communication with the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, holding multiple discussions to ensure that justice is delivered. He emphasized that the Uttarakhand government has extended full cooperation and support to the family during this difficult time.
Highlighting the broader significance of the incident, Vijay said that the people of both Tripura and Uttarakhand share a united stance in demanding justice for Anjel Chakma. “When a person from the North East is abused or assaulted in our state, it is not an attack on an individual alone. It is an attack on the nation itself. Such crimes are crimes against Bharat Mata,” he asserted.
Vijay noted that civil society organizations, student groups, and citizens from diverse backgrounds have come together to raise their voices against the crime. He demanded that the perpetrators be charged with murder and called for the strictest possible punishment, including the death penalty.
The BJP leader also revealed that Anjel Chakma’s father has appealed for compassionate government employment for his younger son, Micheal Chakma. Vijay urged the authorities to consider this request seriously, stating that the family is not psychologically prepared to send their second son away from home at this time.

However, Vijay made it clear that he would not comment on the ongoing investigation. “It is not my prerogative to speak on the investigation or its current status. The law must take its course,” he said.
The tragic death of Anjel Chakma has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger safeguards for students from the North East studying in other parts of the country, as demands for justice continue to grow.
