Severe water crisis in Tripura’s Krishnapur sparks road blockade as residents protest irregular supply under Atal Jaldhara project. Villagers allege two-week disruption, demand urgent restoration, raising concerns over governance, accountability, and public service delivery failure.

A growing water shortage has led to mounting public anger in Tripura’s Krishnapur Assembly constituency, where residents of South Krishnapur Gram Panchayat’s Golabari area staged a road blockade on Saturday, demanding immediate restoration of drinking water supply.

The protest erupted after villagers alleged that despite promises under the government’s Atal Jaldhara project, which aims to provide piped water connections to every household, supply in the area has remained erratic and unreliable. According to local residents, the situation has deteriorated sharply over the past two weeks, with households reportedly receiving no water at all since the Sankranti period.

Frustration among villagers reached a tipping point as repeated appeals to concerned authorities reportedly failed to yield any results. In response, residents — irrespective of political affiliations — came together in a rare show of unity to voice their grievances. Women played a leading role in the protest, standing under intense heat to demand their basic right to access clean drinking water.

The demonstrators blocked the crucial Teliamura–North Maharani main road for more than an hour, significantly disrupting traffic movement and causing inconvenience to commuters. Vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road as the blockade continued, highlighting the severity of the situation and drawing attention from local administration.

Protesters emphasized that the water crisis has not only affected daily household activities but has also raised serious concerns about health and sanitation. Many families have been forced to rely on alternative and often unsafe sources of water, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.

Following the escalation, local administrative officials and community leaders reached the protest site to engage with the agitating residents. They assured the public that immediate steps would be taken to restore water supply and address the technical or logistical issues causing the disruption. Based on these assurances, the protesters agreed to withdraw the blockade, allowing traffic to resume.

However, the incident has also triggered fresh controversy in the region. Several protesters alleged that a local leader associated with the ruling party attempted to intimidate demonstrators during the blockade, further intensifying public resentment. These allegations have added a political dimension to the crisis, with calls for accountability and transparent action growing louder.

The episode underscores the urgent need for effective implementation and monitoring of public utility projects like Atal Jaldhara. As residents await concrete action, the situation remains a critical test for local authorities to restore not just water supply but also public confidence.
