India evaluates IMEC as a strategic alternative trade corridor amid rising geopolitical risks in key maritime chokepoints, aiming to secure energy flows, strengthen supply chains, and enhance economic resilience against disruptions in West Asia and global shipping routes.

India is increasingly positioning the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a strategic alternative to traditional maritime trade routes, particularly as geopolitical tensions threaten critical global chokepoints. A recent report highlights that IMEC could serve not only as a commercial initiative but also as a vital national security and economic safeguard.

According to an analysis by the International Centre for Peace Studies in New Delhi, the current global instability offers India a crucial opportunity to accelerate the implementation of IMEC. The report emphasizes the importance of fast-tracking rail connectivity agreements, improving customs integration, and establishing unified standards for energy and digital infrastructure governance among partner nations.

The urgency stems largely from escalating tensions around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital global trade artery connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Often referred to as the “Gate of Grief,” this narrow passage handles nearly 10 percent of global seaborne oil shipments and about 20 percent of internet traffic through undersea cables. Any disruption in this region forces costly rerouting of ships around Africa, significantly impacting global trade efficiency.

The report warns that increased activity by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen has heightened risks in the region. Missile strikes and maritime threats have already disrupted shipping patterns, raising insurance costs and creating uncertainty for global supply chains. For India, whose trade relies approximately 95 percent on maritime routes, such instability poses a serious macroeconomic threat.

IMEC is being viewed as a long-term solution to mitigate these vulnerabilities. By integrating rail and sea networks across India, the Middle East, and Europe, the corridor offers a diversified route that bypasses high-risk maritime chokepoints. This multimodal connectivity could ensure smoother trade flows even during geopolitical crises.

The situation has been further complicated by ongoing conflicts in West Asia, including tensions involving Iran, Israel, and allied groups. Analysts suggest that if disruptions similar to those seen in the Strait of Hormuz were to occur at Bab el-Mandeb, the consequences for global energy markets and logistics chains would be severe.

Despite these challenges, India has managed to maintain trade continuity through strategic measures such as rerouting shipments, absorbing higher costs, and strengthening naval surveillance. Notably, India adopted a balanced approach by refraining from joining the US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian while significantly increasing its naval presence in the Gulf of Aden and the northern Arabian Sea.

The report underscores that IMEC could play a transformative role if supported by sustained political commitment and adequate financing. Beyond trade, it could also enhance regional cooperation in security, insurance frameworks, and infrastructure resilience.

As global uncertainties continue to reshape trade dynamics, India’s push toward IMEC reflects a broader strategy to future-proof its economic interests while reducing dependence on vulnerable maritime routes.
