Lauren Bell opens up about leading England’s pace attack, embracing responsibility after senior exits, and preparing for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with renewed determination, strong competition, and home advantage hopes to end England’s long trophy drought.

England fast bowler Lauren Bell has admitted she is still adjusting to the responsibility of spearheading the national team’s pace attack, describing the transition as something she “hadn’t really comprehended” until recently.

At just 25 years old, Bell finds herself leading England’s fast-bowling unit—a role once dominated by legendary seamers such as Anya Shrubsole and Katherine Brunt. With the gradual exit of experienced players, including the recent absence of Kate Cross, Bell has naturally stepped into a senior position within the squad.

Reflecting on her rapid rise, Bell acknowledged that the journey has felt almost surreal. Speaking to BBC Sport, she said she had not fully realized when she became the leader of the pace unit. Over time, however, the transition became inevitable as she filled the gap left by departing veterans.

Bell’s breakthrough came during the inaugural season of The Hundred in 2021, where she impressed with her performances. This success paved the way for her international debut in 2022 and subsequent appearances in major global tournaments. Since then, her growth has been steady, marked by consistency and increasing confidence.

Now, Bell leads a relatively young pace attack that includes promising bowlers like Issy Wong and Lauren Filer. The group is further strengthened by versatile all-rounders such as Danielle Gibson, Em Arlott, and Freya Kemp, making it a dynamic yet relatively inexperienced unit.

Despite her leadership role, Bell continues to value the mentorship she received earlier in her career. She spoke fondly of Kate Cross, describing her as a “big sister” figure who guided her during her early days in international cricket. Bell emphasized that she still seeks advice from Cross when needed, highlighting the importance of experience even after stepping into a leadership position.

England’s preparations for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup have intensified under head coach Charlotte Edwards. A recent high-performance training camp in South Africa brought together senior players and emerging talents, divided into squads to simulate competitive match scenarios.

Bell described the camp as both challenging and highly beneficial. Competing against teammates added an extra edge, as players were familiar with each other’s strengths and strategies. This environment, she noted, helped sharpen skills and fostered a competitive mindset essential for international success.

With limited international fixtures scheduled before the tournament, including T20 series against New Zealand and India, England are relying heavily on such camps and fitness benchmarks to fine-tune their preparations.

The team heads into the World Cup with a clear objective—to end a trophy drought that has persisted since their victory in the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Bell acknowledged that the lack of recent silverware has been a source of frustration within the squad, but also a powerful motivator.

England will kick off their campaign against Sri Lanka on June 12, with hopes high that home conditions will provide a crucial advantage. Bell believes the familiar environment could play a decisive role, especially against strong contenders like Australia and India, both currently in formidable form.

As the tournament approaches, Bell’s journey from a promising young bowler to the leader of England’s pace attack symbolizes a new era for the team. While she admits the transition still feels “crazy,” her enthusiasm and determination suggest she is ready to embrace the challenge and help guide England back to global success.
