Veteran CPM leader and party’s state unit secretary Gautam Das passed away in a Kolkata hospital on Thursday morning at around 7.19 am. He was suffering from Covid . Das (70) had earlier been shifted to a Kolkata hospital about a week ago as his condition deteriorated. He is survived by wife and daughter.

Gautam Das considered to be one of the top strategists of the CPM in the state was also a Central Committee member of the party. He was also editor of CPM’s mouth piece Daily Desher Katha for a long period. He relinquished the position after being elevated to the party secretary.

The news of his demise came as severe shock to the CPM workers and leaders . He passed away at a time when the CPM was facing serious erosion of the base and had been trying to revive itself.

Das was believed to be the one of the three top strategists for the CPM two others being politburo member Manik Sarkar  and former party secretary Bijan Dhar. During the Left Front government he palyed a key role for the Marxists from the party front. Apart from other party matters he was specially assigned by the party to look after Home, cultural matters and Media in the state.

His demise created a huge vacuum in the CPM leadership in Tripura.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb in a message condoled the death of Das.
