Five persons were arrested by police for their involvement in attack on Block Development Officer (BDO), Poangbari- Vaijayant Sarkar.

Sajib Debnath (29), Sanjay Patari (24), Jayanta Debnath (46), Biswajit Paul (46) and Sribas Debnath (50) were picked up by the police within hours of Chief Secretary Kumar Alok’s tweet where he condemned the attack and said he had told the DGP to take action.

The five arrested were produced before the court and then remanded to jail custody till September 27.

They were arrested from Madhabnagar area  by Manu Bazar police station

The BDO Poangbari was attacked by a group of around 50-60 villagers led by the Gram Pradhan when he went to Madhavnagar Primary School under Madhabnagar Gram Panchayat for works related to Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana.

In his reaction, MLA Sankar Roy condemned the incident and said, “if there was any error in the beneficiary list, it could have been corrected through discussions.”

In the meantime, reports coming from various sources suggested that Wednesday’s attack on the BDO was ‘pre-planned’ and two persons—one elected representative in Panchayat Samity and one local BJP leader had played the key role. Reportedly, 34 persons were so far identified for the attack.
