Supreme Court urges Delhi High Court to fast-track racial discrimination cases against Northeast citizens, highlighting Anjel Chakma and Nido Tania killings, calling for urgent judicial reforms, time-bound trials, and stronger legal action against racially motivated violence in India.

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday urged the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court to ensure time-bound trials in cases involving racial bias against people from India’s northeast region.

The direction comes amid rising concerns over violent incidents targeting individuals from northeastern states, highlighted by the tragic killings of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, and Nido Tania, a 19-year-old student from Arunachal Pradesh. These incidents have reignited debates on racial prejudice, safety, and the slow pace of justice in such sensitive cases.

A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, observed that cases involving racial discrimination require urgent attention and prioritisation. The bench emphasized that delayed trials undermine public confidence and justice delivery, particularly in cases involving vulnerable communities.

The court was hearing a plea seeking a structured timeline for adjudicating such cases. During the proceedings, the petitioner’s counsel referred to the 2014 murder of Nido Tania in Delhi, noting that despite completed investigations and filed chargesheets, trials often face prolonged delays. This, the counsel argued, reflects systemic inefficiencies that need urgent correction.

While disposing of the plea, the apex court refrained from issuing direct judicial mandates but requested the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court to consider the matter administratively. It suggested a “holistic policy decision” to ensure that cases of racial discrimination are heard on an out-of-turn basis and resolved within a reasonable timeframe.

The issue of racial discrimination gained renewed urgency following the killing of Anjel Chakma, who died on December 26, 2025, after sustaining grievous injuries in an alleged racially motivated attack in Dehradun’s Selaqui area. Chakma, who had completed his schooling at Holy Cross School in Agartala, had moved to Dehradun to pursue an MBA. He was reportedly stabbed in front of his younger brother, Michael, in a shocking act that drew widespread condemnation.

Earlier, on February 18, the Supreme Court had also addressed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking preventive measures against discrimination and violence targeting people from the northeast and other regions. The court observed that identifying individuals based on race, region, sex, or caste represents a regressive societal approach. It declined to entertain the PIL directly, instead asking R Venkataramani to refer the matter to an appropriate authority for further consideration.

Legal experts believe that the court’s latest observation could pave the way for structural reforms in handling discrimination-related cases. Fast-tracking such trials may not only ensure timely justice but also act as a deterrent against hate crimes.

The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the need for a coordinated judicial and administrative approach to combat racial discrimination. As incidents involving northeastern citizens continue to raise alarm, the focus now shifts to whether concrete policy measures will follow to ensure justice is both swift and effective.
