Prez Murmu flagged off the inaugural Soldierathon at Rashtrapati Bhavan, honouring the 253-year legacy of the President’s Bodyguard and Kargil heroes. The event promotes civilian-Armed Forces solidarity, fitness, and supports troop welfare while commemorating India’s military heritage.
President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday flagged off the inaugural Soldierathon at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking a historic initiative to celebrate the 253-year legacy of the President’s Bodyguard (PBG) while paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of India’s Armed Forces and the heroes of the Kargil War.
The event, organised under the theme “Supporting Real Heroes – the Armed Forces of India,” aims to strengthen the bond between civilians and military personnel through fitness, participation, and national pride. Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retd.) was also present at the ceremonial flag-off, highlighting the significance of the occasion.
According to an official statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Soldierathon is guided by the vision of “Run for Soldiers, Run with Soldiers,” encouraging citizens from all walks of life to stand in solidarity with India’s armed forces by actively participating in the event.
The President’s Bodyguard, established in 1773, is the senior-most regiment of the Indian Armed Forces and holds the distinction of being the world’s only Airborne Cavalry Regiment. The regiment occupies a unique position in India’s military history, with its soldiers receiving specialised training as both paratroopers and tankmen. Beyond their ceremonial responsibilities, members of the President’s Bodyguard remain combat-ready and are deployed in some of the country’s most demanding operational environments, including regular assignments at the Siachen Glacier.
The inaugural Soldierathon has been organised not only to celebrate the distinguished legacy of the President’s Bodyguard but also to honour the bravery, dedication, and unwavering commitment of Indian soldiers who have served the nation with exceptional courage.
The event witnessed participation opportunities for people of all age groups and fitness levels, including professional runners, students, families, educational institutions, corporate teams, and first-time participants. Competitors can choose from multiple categories, including 10 km, 5 km, 3 km, and the Cheer Buddy event, making the initiative inclusive and accessible.
Organisers said that the proceeds generated from the Soldierathon will be utilised for the welfare of the troops and horses of the President’s Bodyguard. The initiative also seeks to preserve the regiment’s rich equestrian heritage while contributing to the well-being of serving personnel.
In addition, the Soldierathon will extend support to the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, where soldiers who have sustained life-changing injuries receive specialised medical care, rehabilitation, and assistance to rebuild their lives with dignity.
The event is being organised in partnership with Wonder Cement and Bhutani Infra, reflecting collaboration between the public and private sectors in supporting India’s military community.
Organisers noted that the Soldierathon has evolved into a unique platform where civilians and soldiers participate side by side, symbolising unity, gratitude, and respect for the heroism and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces. The event is conducted annually across military stations in major metropolitan cities as well as tier-two towns to encourage wider public participation.

Beyond promoting physical fitness and community engagement, the initiative seeks to inspire the younger generation by showcasing the ethics, discipline, values, and proud traditions of India’s military institutions.
As India commemorates 27 years of victory in the Kargil War, the inaugural Soldierathon stands as a meaningful tribute to the nation’s defenders, reinforcing the message that every citizen has a role in honouring and supporting the brave men and women who safeguard the country’s sovereignty.
