Starting the new financial year on a positive note today, benchmark domestic equity indices surged by around 1.5%. The Sensex soared 1,187 points to close at 73,134, while Nifty rose 348 points to settle at 22,679.
Earlier, markets opened 2.5% higher amid positive global cues. The Sensex and Nifty traded higher for most of the session before coming off their intra-day highs amid some late-session profit booking.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 25 out of 30 companies logged gains. Among top performers, Trent surged over 6.7%, Indigo climbed 6%, and Adani Ports rose nearly 5.5%. In contrast, NTPC as well as SunPharma slumped 1.64% each, PowerGrid dropped over 1%, and UltraTech Cement fell 0.3%.
Barring Healthcare, which fell 0.2%, all other sectoral indices at the BSE ended in positive territory. Among the top gainers, Services climbed 5%, PSU Banks advanced by nearly 3.7%, and Industrials jumped 3.4%.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 3,828 companies advanced, 508 declined, and 101 remained unchanged.
