Tripura Budget 2026–27 introduces major initiatives for agriculture, fisheries and rural development. Experts emphasize stronger implementation, market linkages and institutional support to transform farmer income, boost Queen Pineapple exports, and achieve potato self-sufficiency in the state’s agri-economy.

The Government of Tripura has presented the State Budget for 2026–27 with several initiatives aimed at strengthening agriculture, fisheries and animal husbandry sectors. While the proposals reflect the government’s intention to improve farmers’ income and rural livelihoods, experts believe that stronger implementation mechanisms and long-term planning will be necessary to ensure that the benefits reach grassroots farmers across the state.

Commenting on the budget, Kiran Bhowmik, PhD Scholar in Agricultural Economics at Tripura University and Research Associate of the Study on State Finances under the Sixteenth Finance Commission of India, stated that the budget has introduced several progressive measures but requires greater focus on institutional support and market integration.

One of the important initiatives announced in the budget is the project on post-harvest management of the famous Queen Pineapple of Tripura with financial support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. The project aims to introduce modern facilities such as grading, packaging, cooling and processing units in eight rural development blocks. While the move is expected to reduce post-harvest losses and promote export potential, experts believe that adequate training, farmer awareness and efficient logistics will be crucial for the success of the project.

The government has also proposed the cultivation of hybrid summer vegetables on 1,300 hectares under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana to enhance productivity and diversify cropping patterns. However, agricultural analysts point out that access to quality seeds, irrigation facilities and market linkages must accompany such initiatives to ensure sustainable outcomes.

Another significant step is the roadmap for potato self-sufficiency through collaboration with the International Potato Center in Peru. The initiative aims to make the state self-reliant in potato seed tuber production by 2028–29 and table potato production by 2029–30. Experts suggest that while the plan is ambitious, adequate extension services and farmer training programmes will be necessary to achieve the targets.

The budget has also announced improvements in marketing infrastructure through the construction of market sheds along national highways and the strengthening of veterinary and fisheries infrastructure. These initiatives could support the agri-based economy, but stakeholders emphasize that infrastructure alone will not be enough unless farmers receive better price realization and access to institutional credit.

According to projections by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Tripura has a Priority Sector Credit Potential of Rs. 14,034.02 crore for 2026–27, indicating significant opportunities for agricultural and rural development. Experts believe that aligning the state budget with this credit potential and ensuring effective coordination between financial institutions and government agencies will be essential to translate policy announcements into real benefits for farmers.

Overall, while the Budget 2026–27 outlines promising initiatives for the agriculture and allied sectors, careful implementation, financial inclusion and strong monitoring systems will determine whether these measures can truly transform Tripura’s rural economy.
