Tripura Legislative Assembly to elect new Speaker on March 18 as nominations open March 17. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath confirms seven additional Bills will also be introduced during the ongoing Assembly session.

The election process for the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly will formally begin on March 16, with voting scheduled for March 18 if required. The announcement was made by Ratan Lal Nath, the state’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister, following the second meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) on Friday.

The meeting took place at the office of Ram Prasad Paul, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, shortly after the first day of the ongoing Assembly session was adjourned following the Governor’s address. The BAC convened to finalize the schedule for key legislative proceedings during the session, including the election of the new Speaker and the introduction of several important Bills.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Nath confirmed that the formal announcement regarding the Speaker’s election will be made on March 16, as all members of the House are currently present in the Assembly. According to the schedule approved by the committee, nomination papers for the position of Speaker will be filed on March 17.

The BAC decided that an announcement regarding the election of the Speaker would be made on March 16 as all members of the House are present. Nomination papers for the post will be filed on March 17,” Nath said.

The minister further explained that the outcome of the election could be determined in two possible scenarios. If only one candidate files a nomination for the post, that candidate will automatically be declared elected Speaker on March 18. However, if more than one candidate contests the election, the Assembly will conduct voting through ballot papers on the same day.

Nath emphasized that in case a contest takes place, the Speaker’s election will be the first item of business on the Assembly’s agenda on March 18. The number of candidates contesting the post will become clear after the nomination process concludes on March 17.

The election of the Speaker is considered a significant procedural step for the smooth functioning of the legislative body. The Speaker plays a crucial role in maintaining order during debates, regulating discussions, and ensuring that legislative proceedings follow established parliamentary rules.

Apart from the Speaker’s election, the Business Advisory Committee also reviewed the legislative agenda for the remainder of the session. Nath revealed that the number of proposed Bills to be introduced in the Assembly has increased significantly.

During the first BAC meeting earlier, the government had planned to introduce three Bills during the session. However, after further deliberations, the committee decided to place seven additional Bills before the House, expanding the legislative workload for the ongoing session.

While the specific details of the new Bills have not yet been disclosed, officials indicated that they would cover various governance and administrative matters aimed at strengthening the state’s policy framework.

The upcoming session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly is therefore expected to be politically and legislatively significant. Apart from electing the Speaker, lawmakers will deliberate on multiple legislative proposals that could shape governance and administrative policies in the state.

With nominations set to begin soon and political attention turning toward the Speaker’s post, the Assembly session is likely to witness intense political activity in the coming days.
