Political activity has intensified in Haryana ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. Amid apprehensions of cross-voting and poaching, the Haryana Congress has sent 31 of its MLAs to Shimla. They have been lodged in a private hotel. The Himachal Pradesh government has made elaborate security arrangements for them, and police have been deployed outside the hotel.
Before legislators left for Shimla, they held a meeting at the residence of Congress senior leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Chandigarh yesterday. The meeting was attended by the state in charge, B.K. Hariprasad, state Congress president Rao Narendra Singh, MPs Deepender Singh Hooda and Jai Prakash, Rajya Sabha candidate Karmveer Singh Boudh and all 37 Congress MLAs. The legislators were advised to remain united and avoid cross-voting, conveying the message of the party’s high command.
The Haryana Legislative Assembly has a total strength of 90 members. Of these, the BJP has 48 MLAs, and the Congress has 37, while the INLD has two, and there are three independent MLAs. A candidate requires 31 votes to win in the Rajya Sabha election. Meanwhile, according to information, six MLAs, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Vinesh Phogat, Kuldeep Vats, Mohammad Ilyas, Parmveer Singh and Chandermohan, have not reached Shimla. Voting for the Rajya Sabha elections in Haryana will be held on March 16, and the Congress MLAs are likely to remain in Shimla until then.
