Vice-Prez C. P. Radhakrishnan addresses the 14th convocation of Tripura University in Agartala. Over 283 gold medalists and 149 PhD scholars will receive degrees as the university hosts its major academic ceremony after a two-year gap.
C. P. Radhakrishnan, the Vice-President of India, is set to address the 14th convocation ceremony of Tripura University on Sunday during his maiden official tour of three northeastern states — Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura. The high-profile academic event is expected to mark a significant moment for the university community as hundreds of graduates receive their degrees after a gap of two years.
The Vice-President arrived in Agartala on Saturday evening after attending the 20th convocation ceremony of Mizoram University in Aizawl. His arrival at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport was marked by a warm reception from top state leaders and officials.
Among those present to welcome the Vice-President were Indrasena Reddy Nallu, Governor of Tripura; Manik Saha, Chief Minister of Tripura; state BJP President and Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee; Chief Secretary J. K. Sinha; and Director General of Police Anurag.
Following his arrival, Vice-President Radhakrishnan was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at Lok Bhavan, located within the capital complex on the outskirts of the city. Later in the evening, a cultural programme was organised at the same venue in honour of the Vice-President, highlighting Tripura’s vibrant cultural heritage.
As part of his engagements in the state, the Vice-President will interact with several “Lakhpati Didis” and members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) at the International Trade and Fair Centre before attending the convocation ceremony. The interaction aims to showcase grassroots economic empowerment initiatives led by women in the region.
During his visit, Radhakrishnan will also pay homage to fallen soldiers at the Albert Ekka Memorial Park, a tribute site dedicated to the memory of war heroes.
Security agencies have put in place elaborate arrangements across Agartala to ensure the smooth conduct of the Vice-President’s visit. Police officials said heightened security measures have been implemented around key venues including Lok Bhavan, the university campus, and the airport.
According to officials of Tripura University, the convocation ceremony holds special significance this year as it could not be organised in 2024 and 2025 due to administrative and logistical reasons. The upcoming ceremony will therefore honour graduates from multiple academic sessions.
During the convocation, certificates, degrees, gold medals, and doctoral degrees will be conferred on successful students. As many as 283 students from different departments will receive gold medals, recognising their outstanding academic performance. In addition, 149 research scholars will be awarded PhD degrees, marking a major milestone in their academic careers.
The ceremony will also feature addresses by several distinguished dignitaries including Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, and the university’s Chancellor Ahmad Javed.
Established in October 1987, Tripura University has played a crucial role in expanding higher education in the state and the wider northeastern region. The institution was later upgraded to a Central University on July 2, 2007, under the Tripura University Act, 2006 passed by the Indian Parliament.
At present, the university oversees a large academic network with 64 affiliated colleges, serving thousands of students across Tripura. The convocation ceremony is expected to reinforce the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and regional development.
